NEW HOBBY

FullSizeRender (3)
I’ve picked up a new little side hobby I’d like to share!  You’ve probably seen the weaving and wall hanging trend that’s been popping up for some time now and either wanted to try or at least pinned it to your DIY board. Well, I did the same so now I’m actually going to make it happen!

I wanted to get some good quality yarn to start with so I looked around and found Camellia Fiber Co. out of Tennessee. I picked out this ombre blue made of 40% alpaca, 40% merino and 20% silk. It’s so incredible soft I wish you could feel the computer screen!

Above is her photo I ordered from and below is my photo when I received it. Things aren’t always exactly how they appear on screen but in this case it was exactly as expected and even better!

A while ago when I was renting a studio at The Goat Farm Arts Center I picked up lots of supplies for dream catchers that I never actually made.  After failing at that project and having a bunch of money sunk into the materials I got pretty discouraged and thought “maybe I should just stick to photography and blogging..”  Well now that I’m in a home and have the space to be more crafty and not feel like I’m over stepping boundaries with a roommate, I feel more inclined to give the crafts thing a go!  I unpacked my box of dream catcher supplies and grabbed all the brass hoops I bought off Etsy. Then added some of the yarn and boom, wall hanging! This one is very small aka adorable. The hoops is a mere 3″ in diameter. It’s the only one I have of this size so I’ll probably keep but I’m planning to make a bunch more with the other hoops I have and sell at a festival or pop up shop here around town. Stay tuned!

BEAVER CREEK, CO

After getting back from the Alabama trip visiting my family we then flew to Denver, boarded the Colorado Mountain Express and started a long drive on icy roads into Beaver Creek.  It took something like 4ish hours to get to the cabin so it was twelve hours of traveling. Long day for sure but when we got there I knew right away it would be worth it! The “Winchester Lodge” as I started calling it was gorgeous and sat right off of a ski trail called Cresta, you could literally ski to the back door! Not only that, you could hike up a small hill to said trail, ski to the lift and be heading to the top of Beaver Creek in minutes!Processed with VSCOcam with n1 preset IMG_1273
Our first day of skiing was Monday. Dustin went off with the boys and his mom and I went to the village to get some lessons.  She is an experienced skier but wanted to perfect some of her weaknesses whereas I hadn’t been skiing since I was 19 (I am 28 years old) so we told them I was a beginner.  They didn’t listen to us and put me with her and two other fairly experienced women and took us all to the top of the mountain. I kept asking “we’re going to go over things…right???” and he kept brushing me off saying, ya ya, it’ll come back to you. Luckily it did come back to me because he skipped the beginner stuff and took me right on a fairly steep run. I was so nervous! But the women in our group encouraged me and I did fine. Dustin’s mom and I really felt like the class wasn’t executed well and we didn’t get in a full day of skiing so we called and got a different instructor for Wednesday.  On Tuesday I went out with Dustin and his youngest sister and skied BC and did really well, minus a wipe out in 3 feet of powder.  Wednesday’s class really helped me fine tune areas I was weak in and the instructor, Wink, was great! He was probably around 70 years young, had two full knee replacements and was a bomb skier! Can’t brag about him enough!

For New Years Eve we went to Crazy Mountain Brewery and got a few flights and tried all their beer. Very tasty! I even liked the pumpkin beer which I usually think is too overwhelming but they nailed it.  Then we met his family at E Town and had dinner followed by hanging at his sister’s apartment in Edwards.Processed with VSCOcam with h6 preset
As we did every night, we ended up in the hot tub! Friday was the forth day of skiing and oddly was my worst of all days. Dustin thinks it’s because I was more fatigued than I thought, I’d agree, my legs just didn’t want to corporate. It also didn’t help that a certain fiance accidentally took us down a blue run!  I managed to survive, which was my ultimate goal, haha!

The lows were in the negatives and the highs were below freezing.  I wore so many layers skiing so my body was fine but my feet were numb from the ankles down even though I wore good socks.  I have never been that cold in my life and I’ve lived in some really cold states, ie. Montana! The cold didn’t stop anyone from having a good time, we all really enjoyed ourselves!Processed with VSCOcam with e2 preset
For Christmas, Dustin got me a pair of Sorel boots. These were the third pair we tried since that brand’s sizing is all over the place between styles. Take my advice, if possible I’d just try them on, I ended up getting a men’s version at Abbadabba’s in Little Five.  Beyond happy with the pair we stuck with and they kept my cold-nature feet quite warm!

On the way in to BC our bus stopped at a Starbucks connected to a ski shop where I picked up this hat by Picture Organic Clothing.  I didn’t own a fleece-lined hat and had only brought a wool cap with me so I figured I needed one, plus it caught my eye with it’s cuteness! Very warm and seems to be made well.

The following photos are in Vail.  We went and explored Vail Village and Lionshead.  It was stunning! We walked around shops and looked at art work in high end art galleries.  Then we took the gondola lift to the top of Vail.  There was a lot of cloud coverage but they were slowly getting burned away by the sun which made the texture of the sky really beautiful.

15596552353_0977fad9ce_kReally enjoyed bonding with Dustin’s family and seeing their vacation home. There’s talk of us going back in the Summer time to hike and explore the trails we skied. Hopefully that pans out because I was also told about a llama hike where a guide loads up a llama with a picnic basket and you all go for a hike and have a picnic-ummm-yes please!

LOW KEY

This Christmas was the first holiday that Dustin and I divided things up between both of our families versus having to choose one or the other. It felt so good feeling the start of our own little family happening and having each other during all the traditions. Next Christmas we’ll have the same last name-crazy!

This year we first went out to Alpharetta for an early celebration of Winchester festivities and gift exchange both on Dec. 14th and the 21st — he’s got a large family and is the oldest of six!  Next we went to Alabama to hang out with the Smith crew. We kept the four days in Tuscaloosa very low key, which is exactly what we needed after packing and moving over the course of two weeks. For nearly the entire holiday we stayed in stretchy pants and lounged around. We cooked a bunch of yummy food, watched several traditional Christmas flicks (i.e. Christmas Vacation, Home Alone) played Cards Against Humanity and consumed copious amounts of wine. The second to last day I actually put on makeup and non-stretchy clothes and we explored around the wooded back yard, that was until I realized Frye boots are not make for hiking (or at least not these boots!)  My parents backyard is beautiful and leads down to a pretty big creek, here’s my one non-pajama look from this week:

Most of this outfit is new, but the newest piece is the Kate Spade sunglasses given to me from my younger brothers girl friend, Emily, thanks girl! Love the mother of pearl detail, these are definitely my go-to shades of the moment.  This was my first time wearing these boyfriend jeans I bought at Urban Outfitters and I really like the fit, though I think the next outfit I pair these with will I’ll have a more feminine shirt.

Today we fly into Denver, CO and then travel a few more hours into Beaver Creek to go skiing for a week. I’m both nervous and excited since I know it’ll be beautiful but also haven’t skied since I was 19 and I’ve broken many bones since that time. I plan to take lessons the first day out there as it’s been recommended that I do so. I’m taking my camera so expect a big recap post next week. Until then, enjoy ringing in the new year!

December Root City Market

16043585075_19a1ef707b_k
This past Saturday I shot my third Root City Market.  It took place over at Stove Works in Old Forth Ward. As always it was a success and a whole lot of fun!  I chatted it up with lots of vendors and friends stopping by. Bought a Christmas gift for Dustin and a cheese/bread board for the new house I’ll be moving into this weekend. The wood came from Front Page News, a bar in Little Five Points, which I thought was very cool!

One of the free activities was a “draw your neighborhood station” made by my roomie, Sarah.  It consisted of vintage inspired postcards she designed that were hung on the window with washi tape that you took down, drew on the back and hung back up with your drawing facing outward. The outcome was so cute and everyone got into drawing their neck of the woods!

Allison of Flower Crown Society made the whimsical wall and ceiling hangings. This is one talented lady!

Good luck wrapping all those gifts and getting your Christmas shopping completed!

ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

01-arabia-mountain-engagement-shoot2
So, so so so, so so soooo THRILLED to share our engagement shoot photos! We both love how they turned out! It was the perfect day to capture our love out at Arabia Mountain especially with all the Fall leaves. Ben and Colleen tag-teamed the evening and caught all the right moments, using both digital and film. Like I mention in the post about why we picked them, the coloring of their photos is dreamy!  I can’t tell you how hard it was to narrow down the selection to a blogable amount-because I wanted to post all 101! But, I don’t want to crash your computer or Iphone so, these are the ones that stood out to me the most-either because of the lighting, the emotions or because they simply RULE!

Of course we had to be silly-it’s us! Dustin had this idea to make it look like I was pulling him up on top of a mountain-turned out pretty good right?!

The first portion of the photos are in the rock quarry side of Arabia Mountain. After getting plenty in that location we moved to the base of the mountain and changed our wardrobe.  For both outfits I wanted to be comfortable and chic while keeping in mind we were in the woods and didn’t want to seem out of place with for example, heels or something way too dressy.  While I normally wouldn’t wear tights out hiking, Dustin assured me it would be fine and I’m happy I did for my dressier look.

We can never take ourselves too seriously, which I like about us!

Dustin had brought along his grandfather’s camera he inherited to snap a few black and white film photos. Ben suggested we use it as a “prop” since it’s special to Dustin, which was a great idea since we both enjoy photography (a lot!) 14-arabia-mountain-engagement-shoot213-arabia-mountain-engagement-shoot2Am I marrying a stud or what?!

Thanks Ben and Colleen for giving us EXACTLY what we envisioned (but even better!)
