SLOW FOOD ATLANTA

On Wednesday Slow Food Atlanta hosted a series called “The Drunken Snail” and partnered with chef Jennifer Booker, Concrete Jungle and Mercier Orchards for a night at Little Vinyl Lounge sipping and snacking on an apple-themed menu.  My good pal Katherine helps run Concrete Jungle so I went to support her efforts as well as get a taste of Fall and find out more about Slow Food. Here’s what I learned, Slow Foods USA is a non-profit organization that believes in slowing down, enjoying good HEALTHY food and taking time to learn about where your food comes from-among many other food related things! It’s national, member supported and has events everywhere. They aim to get you to reconsider the fast, most likely unhealthy, options and consider how that food will affect you and the environment. Like I said, they believe and care a lot about all things food- from growing to educating to eating. Read more here.

Little Vinyl Lounge is under Star Bar. In case you’re wondering it’s always been there but has now become a separate venue rather than just being the place you retreated from the loud and smokey upstairs.  It’s been revamped and is smoke-free! They have a huge jukebox that’s filled with 7″ vinyl records from local bands. The owner, Susan, was telling us that at the end of each month they tally up which record got played the most and that band is rewarded a $100 bar tab!

The featured drink of the night was cider from Mercier Orchards  of Blue Ridge mixed with bourbon and some Autumn spices-so yummy!

Apples were the theme so even the meat was paired with apples. Chef Jennifer made her own bourbon bbq sauce and made these apple and chicken skewers-very tasty. Not pictured were the zucchini and apple fritters and apple pancakes. All of it was delicious and paired very well with the featured cocktail.

This photo screams Fall-love it!  That little fruit is called a flying dragon fruit and was picked by Katherine. The bar juiced 4 pounds of these little guys and used them in a spritzer. It’s taste is citrus with piney, earthy notes.  She gave us one to take home, the cats have been sniffing and curious about this fuzzy little fruit!

Speaking of all things Fall, we are going to the Blue Ridge mountains this evening until Sunday. We plan on having lots of fires and making smores, going hiking, cooking a little bit and maybe going to the Mercier on Sunday if there’s time. Have a good weekend!

CAMP FALL SUPPER

Remember this post recapping my experience with the CAMP Summer Supper? It made such an impression on me that I had to attend the recent Fall Supper!  The venue was the same as the last supper but this time around they transformed it into a cozy Autumn hangout.  Sun in My Belly fits the vibe of the group of folks that host and show up so nicely, it’s a perfect fit!

The motivation of this event is meeting and mingling, so most of the night was nibbling on food in between talking to new and old friends. So I mostly stuck with the easy finger food options, my favorite was the appetizer pork tacos, I could eat a taco any season of the year! Check out my photos from the low-lit evening —

There was a Smile Booth, fire pit, and a really great raffle of the above prizes (more not captured in this photo.) I was crossing all my fingers and toes for that Atlanta stamp made by Yes Ma’am Paper Goods!! Sadly I didn’t win anything but I did leave with a great time and some new gal pals! Thanks for another great time CAMP!

weekend wear 05

I know it’s almost a new weekend but I have a good excuse for just now getting my ‘weekend wear’ up; my laptop has died. I keep holding out waiting for it to turn on but sadly, I think it’s gone for good. I mean I bought it in 2007 so it’s been a darn good computer! Now I’ve got to extract everything off, most importantly my programs! Ugh, don’t even want to think about that headache right this second so onto my outfit!

This week’s been pretty laid back and after a packed weekend it’s definitely what we needed!

On Sunday we have three venue visits; 2 barns and the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center-so excited to get the ball rolling!

TWO URBAN LOVERS

A Valentines Day Recap: Because Dustin had to work till 7 on Friday we decided to move our fancy dinner to Saturday and instead got our matching tattoos the actual night of Valentines Day. We went to Southern Star on Ponce and got puzzle pieces tattooed on our right ankles, his is a little bigger than mine – pic to follow when they are healed. We kept that night low key and then had reservations on Saturday at Two Urban Licks off the Beltline. I had never been to this restaurant but had heard a million and one great things about the menu.

My handsome date:

I had really only seen the location from the Beltline while riding my bike so I didn’t know what to expect as far as environment and size of the place so I was very surprised at how big and open it was! The decor was also on point with oversized pendant lighting and a color scheme that just so happened to go with the holiday.

I wore a BB Dakota jacket, H&M shirt, LOFT skirt, Nine West boots, Kate Spade bag and ByPhilippe neckace.

While we were standing outside snapping photos the sky was changing colors by the minute, this was my favorite color scheme.

We started with the complimentary bread and calamari appetizer which was suggested by my boss who frequents the restaurant, both were very delicious! In my experience trying many different fried calamari dishes I’ve noticed it pairs best with a sweet and slightly spicy chili sauce.  They not only had drizzled chili sauce but also added a creamy sauce which made it even better!  As for the main, Dustin and I both got the scallops dish, he read “gouda grits” and was instantly sold.  I love scallops but I don’t usually order it as a main because it’s usually not enough food, but since we had apps I went for it and was plenty full.

I was stuffed by the time we were asked about dessert but since it was a special occasion and all we ordered the apple tart which was topped with bourbon ice cream. It was beautiful and delicious and a great model for a silly photo!

Thanks to Dustin for treating me to a lovely dinner and being the best friend and lover a girl could ask for, I am so thankful! Our first Valentines couldn’t have been any better!

REAL GOOD STUFF

One of my favorite places to walk around, shop and eat in Atlanta is Westside Provisions District off Howell Mill. My love for this area began when I was renting a studio at the Goat Farm several years ago and it keeps growing with each new space that pops up including the recently opened JCrew Womens store.  Here’s an outfit I wore while grabbing lunch with Dustin and snapping streetstyle pics for Jezebel Magazine.

Hope everyone is ready for the *FAST* approaching holiday!  My shopping is pretty much done just need to complete a DIY project for mine and Dustin’s family which is on schedule and I plan to share here after it’s past the point of spoiling the surprise! For the first time ever I won’t be going home but rather spending Christmas with my boyfriend and his family.  Feels strange to have already received my presents via Fedex from my folks and to not be gearing up for a trip but also feels great to be this in love and have the chance to spend the holiday with my other half starting the beginning of our traditions.  I’ll miss my family’s many traditions including the candle light church service on Christmas Eve followed by driving around singing carols and checking out Christmas lights.  Then on the morning of Christmas, pawing through our cross-stitched stockings made by my Nana and sorting out the gifts in piles by name and waiting for my “turn” to open but I’ve gotta roll with the flow and this year it’s not the norm.  Biggest reason why my family isn’t “doing” Christmas is my parents house is in boxes from the move and my dad has to fly (he’s an airline pilot for Southwest) so we are putting our traditions on pause till next year.

Speaking of gifts, my early start to celebrating Christmas included Santa bringing me the Kate Spade purse I wanted and an Ipad Air, thanks to Santa Dad and Mrs. Kathy Claus for making this internet-loving-fashion-blogging-lady HAPPY.
