OUR HONEYMOON | WHERE WE STAYED

22325887443_00f15820b9_k
We’re married!

The wedding was everything we had hoped it would be and more! Since I don’t have the professional photos yet, I’ll wait and share more about the wedding when I do :)

I want to first jump into recapping our honeymoon because it was EPIC!

We went to Tulum, Mexico “where the jungle meets the sea” the Monday after our wedding.  We landed in Cancun then took our shuttle, The Happy Bus, first to get street-side tacos and Coronas then drove the two hours South to our hotel, Ahau Tulum.  When we arrived they greeted us with mimosas and said “this is your new home, welcome to paradise” Indeed, it was paradise!

Lounging here on our porch wearing my staples of the trip; a Stetson hat, Le Specs sunnies and a Forever 21 kimono. Pretty much had these and similar pieces on rotation the whole time when we were doing things around the hotels.

Ahau is a smaller hotel resort with an attached restaurant, massage therapist on site (Julieta, gave me the best massage of my life!) yoga studio and beach side cabanas. There was great beach access, and in my following post you’ll see more photos of the food from the restaurant and surroundings!

My cutie and his uniform; a Stetson I bought him for his birthday and a breathable Columbia shirt. Gotta stay shaded and cool in the jungle!

I went gaga over all the details! We were told the furniture and floors were sourced and made locally.

The sitting area in our room that served mostly as a resting place for all our gear that we laid out for the follow day’s adventures.

I’m wearing the same Le Spec shades as above, a Free People tunic and Victoria Secret swim top.

After three nights at Ahau we moved over to our second location, The Beach Tulum.

The reasoning for this was simple, I just couldn’t decide on one place and since we had 6 nights it made sense to us to have two experiences. Turned out to be a great idea!

The hotel was everything I’d hoped it would be; chic with minimal decor, a fantastic staff, lush tropical plants (fiddle leaf figs everywhere!) and bright whites – such a paradise! They also had a restaurant and bar called Ziggy’s which we ate breakfast at each morning. More on that later as well!

The hotel lobby had two beautiful Mayan dream catchers that I obsessed over! Seriously I bet Dustin was thinking “Ok, I get it, move on” haha but I didn’t and we went on a hunt for one. Ended up finding them but decided it didn’t match our home vibes and I went with a more monochrome style. Currently hanging in the bedroom!

Of the two hotels, we had the best experience at The Beach.  The biggest thing is that it was what we expected. When we arrived at Ahau they put us in a room that wasn’t what I booked and then tried to pawn it off as mine. After going round and round with me ending up in tears and pulling the “honeymoon card” they finally (sorta) admitted their mistake and offered to pay for the extras charged to the hotel room.  It was a frustrating start to our trip but after we agreed it was fair we shook off the bad vibes and began our trip of a lifetime!

I would suggest either hotel to anyone visiting Tulum, and regardless if you stay at Ahau you can always book an amazing massage with Julieta, she rules!

As you’d expect I took so many photos so I’m going to recap in several posts; next up our adventures, then a mashup of moments, then our favorite restaurant and finally the wildly popular perfumery- Coqui Coqui!

ARRINGTON VINEYARDS

While the guys were off at Dustin’s bachelor party, Cristi and I road tripped to Nashville to hang and celebrate our friend Courtney’s birthday.  We went to a few backyard parties, hit up tasty restaurants (Little Octopus + The Post + Pharmacy) but the highlight of the trip was visiting Arrington Vineyards!

Kix Brooks of Brooks and Dunn opened in the vineyard in 2007. Just 25 miles from Nashville, it’s a must visit!

Naturally my favorite was the chardonnay. I did, however, enjoy the rosé and the cabernet sauvignon during our tasting. Cristi raved about a dessert red that was served with a raspberry chocolate. All around, great wines!

I think she had a good birthday weekend ;)

While writing this (and while we sipped wine on the patio) I listened to Brooks and Dunn and it brought me back to growing up in Montana and going to rodeos with my family.  I love how music can strike up so many feels!

Next time I’d like to get a tour of where the magic happens, but this only happens Monday – Friday. We didn’t know this but it didn’t stop us from exploring, which they encourage, and having a blast!

Whether it’s a vineyard, distillery or brewery-count me in!

HONEYMOON PLANNING: TULUM

sincerely_jules
After a lot of debating between here and there we decided to go with Tulum, Mexico for our honeymoon!

The other spots we tossed around were Costa Rica and Greece but Mexico won for many reasons. Ultimately, we decided we wanted to go to Greece, however, November isn’t the best time to go. Rather then spend all of our money on a Costa Rica trip we came up with the game plan to do a cheaper and easier trip now and save some of our honeyfund to visit Greece when it’s prime time to go in mid-May of 2016.

Last week we bought our plane tickets and this week we are working on nailing down our hotels.  We want to skip around and maybe even stay in Playa Del Carmen since it’s in between Cancun (where the airport is) and Tulum.

The top hotels that are in the running are Coqui Coqui, Ahau Tulum and Casa de las Olas.  Still perusing just in case I missed a goodie and also open to suggestions!

Adorable map by The Kitchy Kitchen, she also has an impressive guide here.

Below are images that I found while doing research on Tulum that got me very excited about our trip-

So much charm in this little beach town!

Things we are excited to do: swim in the cenotes, check out Mayan ruins, eat all the tacos, drink all the margaritas, chill, spear fish (Dustin), snorkel, watch the sun set, buy local goods and whatever other adventures we stumble upon!

Let the countdown begin! 131 days to be exact!

LOMOGRAPHY 35MM FILM

The scanner we ordered from Amazon came in and we immediately got to scanning all the film we had from months and months ago! For $100 this thing is awesome and will save us TONS of money when shooting film.  The Lomography film we used was color negative 100 ISO 35mm which you can buy for cheap here. This film loves the sun and creates interesting light leaks and color.

In this post there are photos from Edisto Island, The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Piedmont Park , Tennessee, Florida and good ole home life.

NAWLINGS

Over the weekend we did a trip to New Orleans with two other couples. The purpose? To party, duh! But really it was because some of them, including Dustin, had never been to the Big Easy and since March isn’t blazing hot we made the plans and went. The Atlanta folks left on Thursday and did a night in Alabama at my parents place to break up the trip and the Nashville folks just drove up on Friday.  Our arrivals aligned perfectly at our little rental in the Faubourg Marigny and soon thereafter headed to Frenchmen Street to grab a drink. The first spot we walked into was Bamboula’s which had a really fun ragtime style band performing. Then we made our way down Frenchmen to Decatur Street where there was a St. Patrick’s Day parade lining up and it hit us-this was the weekend everyone would be celebrating St. Patty’s Day!! Heck ya!! We then knew this trip was going to be even more wild. 16845312671_3a3fb173f7_k
Even though we didn’t come prepared to throw down for an all-green-everything-holiday we joined in with the crazies and partied it up! After the Frenchmen parade and exploring various bars in that area we continued on to that night’s goal-Bourbon Street.  Personally, I could have done without, but since I was with a few newbs, I wanted them to have the experience.  Along with Bourbon we all wanted to get a ghost tour so after a little debauchery we headed to Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar – which is the oldest bar in New Orleans.  Here we met a miss Bloody Mary who took us around, sharing stories and knowledge of the city. We got lucky with landing Mary as our guide. She not only knew everything there was about ghosts and spirits but she’s also a historian so we learned a good deal about the city itself. She’s done voodoo weddings, exorcisms, spirit cleansing and a bunch more I’m sure she didn’t want to share.  She can baptize ya, marry ya and bury ya! After the tour it was back to Bourbon until we retired.16658781248_3b1a90ea86_k
Day two we started with brunch at Magnolia Grill. The service was, eh, not great but the food was yummy!  Here in ATL when you ask for hot sauce it’s usually Sriracha or Cholula, in NOLA it was Crystals which we discovered makes everything taste amazing. What attracted me most about Magnolia was mention of 50’s style decor, which did not disappoint!16659014920_a9e4929c0a_k
After walking off brunch and exploring around the open air market and antique shops we continued on and went downtown. Explored some more and then took a cab to Magazine Street to the Garden District.16226422263_ea021d2441_k
Blocks and blocks of Southern-style mansions lined the little streets. You could really tell the age of the neighborhoods by the massive size of the trees. A really beautiful area to peruse if you like house gazing.
16226416953_adfd8ba409_h
In that same area we discovered another huge St. Patrick’s Day party and parade. We stood around with families and drunkards catching-and dodging-beads and random objects like cabbages being thrown from the massive floats. When that parade was done we decided it was po boy time and we set out to find the perfect pit stop. In route to Parasol’s we ended up spotting Magazine Street Po Boy and popped in there and decided, by advice from a local, this was it. Perfect choice too because it was delicious! After that we picked up to-go beers and walked around the closed down streets:

The contents of my bag, excluding the beer, were found on the ground or caught! The beer is the blonde ale by Tin Roof Brewing out of Baton Rouge and was really good. We always like to try locally made brews when we’re in a new town.

Exploring new places with my love is just the best!

Can we go back to this moment right here please?!

I’m not certain of this fact but it seems like St. Patty’s Day is second to Mardi Gras when it comes to parades and partying. They don’t mess around. It was parade after parade. Costumes like you wouldn’t believe!
16224013324_f1d87c01cb_kAfter we had our fill of bead covered streets we made our way to the Lafayette Cemetery No.1 to check out the crypts and mausoleums.  Even the exterior was beautiful with the different textures and ferns peaking out of the cracks. 16660239429_3e3567288e_k
In case you are wondering why all the graves are above ground it is because the city is below sea level and with the hurricanes and flooding they had issues with the graves rising out of the ground so this way, they just get covered in water and dry out again. 16658786938_8bc1272c0b_kOnce the sun started to go down and we realized we could use a freshening up before dinner we headed back to the house. That night we stuck around the French Quarter that was near our homebase, ate a good meal, went to a local artist market and popped into a few bars to listen and dance to music. 16660235029_4ff542b654_k
Sunday was our last day and we knew we wanted to do one more thing before we left. So after brunch and swinging into a few shops to grab souvenirs we set out to the bayou for a tour.
IMG_9773
The boat company we went with was Pearl River Eco Tours. Even though we originally wanted an airboat tour I’m glad we went with Pearl River because our guide was very knowledgeable and we actually learned a lot about everything from how Spanish moss got it’s name to the native snakes to why the alligators float so long without moving.
16660235609_5bbcf844ac_k
My favorite part of the tour was when our guide took us to an area where they had been feeding some wild pigs corn and he knew they’d be there. When we arrived we saw a little pack with a few adults and a handful of babies. The babies were so adorable! Then he said “watch this” and called out “come here girl, come here girl!” and then….a huge lady pig came running through the grass, jumped into the water and swam over to the boat almost climbing in! He fed her some marshmellows and horse treats until she was good and full. It was a highlight of the trip for sure!
16820509036_5777b74d56_k
Our big purchase of the trip was this cow skull from Greg’s Antiques. We’ve been wanting one and this guy was only $75 which was very reasonable.

This was one of those trips you don’t want to end. That trip where everyone is trying to convince one more person to agree to taking Monday off to extend it one more day. We all had such a good time, we just didn’t want it to stop. The couples-Cristi/Derek and Courtney/Alex were such great travel companions, I’d travel with them anytime-till the next adventure friends! <3
