CALIFORNIA | LA + SILVERLAKE

Holy moly it’s been a month since I’ve blogged. Been keeping friends and followers up to speed on Instagram and Snap but sadly, blogging was put on the back burner while traveling and living a crazy nomad life. To catch you up, since August 1st we’ve been bouncing around from various friend’s homes while we wait for our new house. It’s been a long 51 days of living out of suitcases and on other people’s beds. ‘Ready to have our own place’ is the understatement of 2016.  So, since we were already living out of a suitcase we took it upon ourselves to travel. First stop was a a solo trip out to California to visit my girlfriend Courtney in Los Angeles.  I flew out on a Wednesday, chilled and caught up that night then the following day we worked out, ran into Pauly Shore (ya, he was a creeper) and then went to be extras for a Tegan and Sara music video.  Don’t want to say too much about the video because I signed a bunch of papers saying I wouldn’t but here’s some behind the scenes:

29501624140_2e2b9af68a_k

This is what we sweated in, err, I mean wore!  That day was 109 degrees and felt every bit like it was in the 100s. We were dying in the popup tent that served as the extra’s hang out spot. At one point  I broke down and grabbed a way-too-short vintage slip and put it on over these tights and heels and kept talking in a heavy smoker accent like I was serving beverages in an old brothel. Make lemonade right? While I was looking like a hussy, Court had her ALL RAYON EVERYTHING dress half off with a borrowed tank from a model chick. Laughing just thinking about it! But for real, we are from the South and were in literal hell. If only the Snaps from this day still lived on…

29794015485_8e0ba3c1f4_k

I wore these fun retro shades and sky high (for me at least..) Seychelles heels.

29501625110_57407ea9f4_k

Another extra was the ridiculously cool, Felicity Jayn Heath. She and her Nasty Gal tee won best in show IMO! (back says “easy go”!)

29168679203_34a8163cb6_k

After a long and sweaty day on set (ok, that sounds pretty cool right?!) it was cocktail time! Court took me to one of her favorite spots, Sawyer.

Sawyer, 3709 W Sunset Blvd

Besides having amazing cocktails and brussels sprouts, the aesthetic was so rad! The collection behind her in this pic is basically a mood board for my LIFE.

29168628563_ad4cda63ad_k

Seconds Count- gin, champagne, lavender honey, lemon and bee pollen.

After Sawyer we met up with one of her friends and went to a warehouse party that was really cool. Reminded me of something I’d attend here in Atlanta. Big warehouse space with about a dozen artists that rent bays and every now and again open it up for shows. I was mostly impressed with the fact they had a free open bar!

On Friday we went to Palm Springs and had quiet the adventure but I’m skipping that for now and saving for next post because I want this to be all Silverlake :)

Sunday, Courtney and another nutrition blogger hosted a free Soul Cycle class in downtown. Even though I bike at the gym around 12 miles a week, I was pretty nervous.  I mean...LOS ANGELES…fitness…beautiful people…intense exercise…But it wasn’t bad!  I sweated several gallons and was sore for the following 4 days but I made it! After the workout we went to Cafe Gratitude for some healthy grub.

Cafe Gratitude, 300 S Santa Fe Ave

I swear it was like someone took the vibes I want in our new house and put them into a restaurant! Everything from the floors to the color palette spoke to me.

29178328553_2980bb91da_k-683x1024

I’m not trying to pick up another failed hobby so I’ll leave the macrame’n for the pros on Etsy and just hunt one of these wall hangings down!

In anticipation of Greece I got the “Content” a Greek quiche served in the cutest cast iron skillet. So healthy and so good!

During the brunch I got to chat with a bunch of really smart and driven women. Most were nutrition bloggers like Courtney and one is following her dream and opening up a restaurant.  I joke but I’m actually serious, I think I went to LA and lost weight. Besides the fancy drinks, it was one of the healthiest trips yet!

The Black Cat, 3909 Sunset Blvd

After getting cleaned up I met an Atlanta girl friend of mine, Ciara, over at The Black Cat.  Wish I had taken a photo of the bar chairs and table tops but they were filled with people trying to enjoy themselves so the next best thing was the ceiling. We had pre-shopping drinks here and then came back for dinner. I’m starting to think of myself as a brussels sprouts connoisseur because if they are on the menu and seem fancy, I’m getting them! The ones here and Sawyer were so dang yummy.

Our initial plan was to go “boutique hopping” and I was going to do this huge recap on my favorites but after I bought two things I was done spending money and really just wanted to sit and visit with Ciara on my last full day. Blogging is fun but enjoying life is also important and that day yielded lots of memories without being a slave to this site.

Besides, I really liked Silverlake and didn’t want to leave.  Probably (again with an Atlanta reference) but it really did just remind me of hanging in one of our little communities like EAV or Poncey-Highlands. Good energy and people.

ReForm School, 3902 Sunset Blvd

29681254512_584c669680_k

Ciara and I may live on different coasts but we’re always hitting each other up for questions like “should I buy this or this?” or “what do you think, worth it?” and “this IG’ers amazing, girl crush for sure!” Too bad we got closest after she left but since I’m not going anywhere and Atlanta is part home for her, we’re set to hang more!

And plus she’s fun as hell!

29711581151_b542dffd89_k

From ReForm School I got an arrow keychain from a husband and wife duo I’ve followed for some time, All Roads. The other boutique I went in was Mohawk General Store. I got a Kathleen Whitaker thread through earring of my dreams! With the help of my girl friend Elizabeth and Design Love Fest, I nailed the boutique spots right out the gate!

Bar Stella, 3932 Sunset Blvd

So after my two great purchases it was time to just chill. Ciara had read about Bar Stella and wanted to give it a try. With an entry like this, would you not wanna see inside?

29501652460_6dabb663ce_k

A fancy margarita and rose’

Inside the tiny bar was so cozy. It was dark, even in the day time, but still inviting. We joked around with the bartender (who later sat by us at dinner at The Black Cat) until some seats outside opened up.

29502922310_73a19bb31f_k

Inside and outside are so tiny but it makes it that much better-you’re forced to be close to people, which means conversation is bound to get started!

29178328553_2980bb91da_k

Too sexy not to get a close-up

img_0113

Met a sweet girl named Squirrel out on the porch, look at that smile!

Ciara and I took over a small table outside and quickly made friends. Love that she’s like me and will talk to anyone!  Stacy, a really fun lawyer,  lived around the corner and in conversation about living in big cities she said “oh yea my apartment has a view of the Hollywood sign but it’s still affordable” Since I was leaving the following day and hadn’t seen it, I said “no way! I wanna see!” It was as if we were old girl friends hanging out and before you know it, Ciara and I are on her porch attempting to take artistic photos of the sign and palm trees!

29794053235_f329a0ab4d_k

Pure rosemary joy

After hanging for a bit and planning to make moves to meet with Courtney we headed back.  But, before we did, Stacy asked “do you guys want the smelly tour?” and in unison Ciara said “yas!”  Sure enough there was every herb and awesome smelling plant on the way!

Following Bar Stella and dinner at the Black Cat, Ciara went back to Costa Mesa and Court and I went to Davey Waynes for a dance party. How can I do that all in one day? Lots of practice :)

Hope I didn’t lose you in my blog vacation!
Next up:  Palm Springs

CHICAGO PART 3

28313938442_28de493c17_k

It’s the final post of our Chicago trip! This includes the 4th of July, as you might have guessed from the delicious donuts as well as Wicker Park. The donuts Dustin actually picked up on the 3rd (only mentioning this because below you’ll see another breakfast..) from Glazed and Infused  just down the street from our Airbnb.  Typically I’m really good about not eating ‘bad’ stuff like this for breakfast but when on vacation, I make a few exceptions ;) the small one was the best, just a good ole old fashioned glazed.  I don’t think I shared it with D at all!  MmMmmm!

27802892673_dda1730094_k

Lots of spots around Chicago had these open air seat and window fronts, guess since their Summers are SO NICE it’s natural AC. Makes for great pics too!

What we really ate on the 4th was CBA, Chicago Bagel Authority, also really close to our spot.

28385829036_c2b94a1989_k

We got the Chia Bagel which had veggie spread, swiss, avocado, lettuce, sprouts & honey mustard on sesame and was heavenly! Messy but heavenly.

27802874363_910e52e6ab_k

Wearing my trusty Stetson, Anthro dress, Chucks, Madewell bag and Raybans from Shopbop.

After our breakfast it was off to Wrigleyville!

First stop was a shop for some Cubs gear for the game!

27802883193_136b53df3c_k

Dustin had been to a Cubs game in the past and had an absolute blast at the Wrigley Roof Tops and wanted to do it again. Super glad he knew about it because it was so cool!

Outside the stadium there are all these old town homes that have been converted into baseball game venues with viewing rooms, kitchens and roof top stadium seating.  It’s $65-$85, depending on the “venue” and it’s all you can eat and drink.  We booked the 3643 N Sheffield location which was a fantastic view of the whole field!  The food was fresh made to eat-grilled chicken, hotdogs, brats, burgers-and the makings for a salad and sides. Beer was legit too, Goose Island and Brooklyn Brewing were the two we stuck with. I would 100% recommend this route if you find yourself attending a Cubs game!

Cubs won and we continued the party after for some celebratory drinks (because we obviously needed more booze..) with new friends we made during the game around Wrigleyville. After hanging with them it was off to Dustin’s college buddy’s place in downtown for hangs, dinner and fireworks. If you can believe it, we kept going and met up with an Atlanta friend who got engaged earlier in the night and celebrated with them in their hotel room. PHEW. WHAT A DAY! Needless to say, this was one of the nights we Ubered home..

We finished off the trip with a day exploring Wicker Park.  First it was walking around looking at amazing homes and road candy like the above.

Then we popped into some boutiques and per usual, I had to check out the Free People..

So dreamy! I love seeing how each city does their Free People displays and what buildings they reside in. Chicago’s Wicker Park did NOT disappoint!

Such a hip part of Chicago, just look at this laundry mat!

I made three purchases this day. One was at FP (duhhh.) the other was at the above vintage shop run by the sweetest French man I’ve ever encountered!  We must have chatted with him for an hour about all sorts of random things. Vegetarianism, vintage belt buckles, running-just to name a few! I nabbed a classic black leather Coach backpack which is a check of the list of things I’ve been hunting for some time now.

This is Kohl, Frenchmen’s shop dog and BFF. He’s 18 and was so sleepy after a night of NO sleep from all the fireworks. Such a sweet guy.

Third purchase I made was from a shop called Una Maes a rustic boutique for both men and women with brands we both love. I got a Brixton hat that you’ll see come Fall, likely A LOT!

After shopping around it was time for a hair of the dog (after all the day before was ALL YOU CAN DRINK!) and what caught our eyes was this beautiful bright white with pops of colors building that looked brand new to the area.

Mahalo.

28135984570_4e1108797f_k

My my my was it pretty! Around each corner was beauty. The upstairs had just been painted so it wasn’t ready for the public but our server told me to sneak up there and look around. LOOK WHAT I FOUND…

Macrame lounge chairs! Aside from the decor being crazy on point (wishing now I would have snapped more pics) the food was real good too.

28135992570_590fc17318_k

They offer a traditional Hawaiian menu with poke and even SPAM!  Even if you’re not into the cuisine, I’d definitely recommend stopping in for a look and maybe a Hawaiian beer if nothing else!

Welp, there it is. Our Chicago trip that took me way too long to blog about. Actually have built up a library of stuff to post so expect and outfit post and restaurant review very soon!

CHICAGO PART 2

28313951502_7c71b95996_k

Continuing to play catch up on this overdue Chicago post, here’s number 2/3 posts!  This covers the day we went to Millennial Park and did a few activities around there.

28313952912_1586d3c3fc_k

Like visit THE BEAN! So touristy but having seen on IG that Mark from Blink 182 was there, we thought we’d snoop around and grab a few silly pics while we were there.  Speaking of Blink, we are seeing them tonight! AH! The high schooler that lives on in me is SO PUMPED…well lets be honest, so is this 30 year old. New album, pretty dang good if I do say so. Dustin is up there with biggest fans, so tonight should be a real good time.

Back on subject..

28385866006_2d7c411fcd_k

My accessories can be found on Shopbop.

28136055800_99953a85b2_k

By the bean I spotted this really rad pink taxi. Couldn’t help but admire!  Had this been an option to drive up to our wedding in, I just may have picked it ~still love the blue Carrollton taxi we did use but that pink tho!

After walking around the park , stopping to admire the amphitheater and a few public art pieces and grabbing a juice from one of the food trucks nearby, we headed to the Art Institute for some browsing.

28313982382_b049aa30c9_k (1)

A personal favorite, Van Gogh. They had a nice size collection of his, including the very famous self portrait which was way smaller than I thought it was. *Hand for reference

The Art Institute was packed with pieces I grew up studying.  Their offering of owned and borrowed collections were very impressive.

At first we weren’t into the idea of an audio tour but then started seeing people using them and it seemed fun.  Since I had never done one (thought it was for old folks..and maybe it is) said, why the heck not, didn’t regret even though it was one more thing to carry around.  They did a really great job with the background music and facts, the delivery of the message was enjoyable too. Learned things we wouldn’t have otherwise known about the art.

Artwork is impressive but I think one of the neatest aspects of museums are the artifacts.  Especially having a (small) background in Anthropology, I enjoy seeing things I studied back in college.

28313969802_3944121349_k

Exhibit I got the most into was the Native American display. Don’t know much about my heritage but what I do know is there’s some Cherokee, Chickasaw and Creek on my mom’s side of the family. My favorite photo of the exhibit was this squash blossom necklace but had the lighting been right on the traditional ceremony outfits, I would have shared one of those for sure. Animal bones whittled into beads and so many unique materials used to create beautiful clothing and head dresses, rad to see it so well preserved.

28385870976_32e1c2ed00_k

The above basket is in the same exhibit. The little bits flaring out are feathers, entire thing is covered in beads, those tiny details are so impressive.

28313962952_17d84e4e4b_k

Dustin’s favorite painter is Monet.  As it turns out the Institute had several of his series. Like the above and his stacks of wheat. Interesting to see how one image can be changed depending on the angle, season, mood of artist and colors used. The art itself is pretty but look at those frames! Takes them up a notch.

While the audio tour was fun, we didn’t realize how long it was taking us. We didn’t have an outlined schedule for the day but didn’t anticipate the museum being the WHOLE DAY, which was the case. We browsed and admired until they were closing up! I really could go on about the various exhibits that we spent time on but I won’t do that to you, you gotta see it for yourself!

Worked up quite the appetite looking at art so it was PIZZA TIME!

28313950472_cf77aaa9af_k

Feast your eyes on this beauty ~ STUFFED DEEP DISH ~ from Giordano’s. Now, I realize there are probably more underground, non-mainstream, pizza joints but you cannot deny the deliciousness of Giordano’s. Sorry not sorry to my foodie friends. Plus, we were so starving I could have eaten Sapporos and been happy. But for real, it was amazing.

28313945882_52f9186704_k

Mushrooms, chicken sausage and spinach, A+++ layered pizza casserole perfection!

After chowing down and resting our feet it was time to burn off that bread so we made the trek to Navy Pier.

Keeping it comfy at Navy Pier in a FP top, Gap jeans, Nikes, Madewell bag and Eye Buy Direct specs.

Keeping it comfy at Navy Pier in a FP top, Gap jeans, Nikes, Madewell bag and Eye Buy Direct specs.

Holy moly tourists! Too much. Minus the view, I hated everything about it but then we walked to the end and found a beer garden that was setting up for a free concert. Stuck around and so glad we did, the band was energetic with great people watching. Befriended some German guys and hung around until we were freezing (IN JULY, so wild.)

28313988022_c83390b0df_k

Chicago’s sunsets were really impressive! Snapped this on my phone during an L train ride back to the apartment. The day was so exhausting on this old lady body I was trying to lay low after the pier but Dustin really wanted me to experience the Violet Hour, a speakeasy in Wicker Park. Thank goodness he dragged me out because, what an experience! We waited in a small line outside of a simple door until told we could go in. It was dark and smelled of delicoous orange peel and herbs.  We got a few snacks (hello best bacon wrapped dates, ev!) and drinks. The drink that impressed me most was the “Circles of Confession” an egg white sour with notes of “lavender, huckleberry, and a funky nose of grass and sun-drenched shale” Yep..

Museum + Navy Pier was a fun section of the trip! Come back at the end of the week for the final post!

CHICAGO PART 1

So … it’s taken me a bit but I’m finally getting around to posting about our epic Chicago trip!

It’s nearly the end of the month and we went over the 4th weekend. Why has it taken me so long? To be honest, I got home and all the drama happening around the globe really got to me. Not trying to spark up a ton of emotions here but the gist is that between shootings, what happened in France and protests..posting about my vacation seemed like the least of mine or anyone else’s worry. Current events still aren’t good but I’ve regained the desire to work on photos and write again, so here we go!

28314022202_a6ef2f0df3_k

Nikes were a must for all the walking! Over the course of the trip I wore these, my Chucks and sandals at night. This outfit includes Ray Ban sunglasses, Anthropologie dress, Madewell purse and FP bra.

First thing we did off the plane was buy a pass for the *awesome* L train and ride it into Chi-town (do “cool” people say this?) I hope the residents know how blessed they are with their public transportation!  Only time we were in a car was Ubering when we wanted to rest our feet towards the end of the trip.  Other than that it was the L, rented bikes or bus.

After dropping off our bags at our Airbnb, we went (read: ran) to the John Hancock building for the panoramic view of the city and made it just in time for the sunset.  Dustin was insistent that it was better than the Willis Tower and I can’t imagine he was wrong! Felt like I could see every square inch from the lounge on the 96th floor.

28418994205_7e05503027_k

Bottom level of the building.

28314019012_e89ee7dfd1_k

See that Armitage sign on the left? That brick building right behind it was our home away from home!  In the Airbnb listing they said light sleepers may be bothered by the train but they had earplugs in the room. I consider myself a light sleeper, however, the train didn’t bother me at all. Think it helped we got in pretty late each night, had been drinking and the room was really dark. I also play a noise machine app on my phone every single night regardless of where I stay so the combo of all that made being nearly ON the tracks no sweat.  Getting to where we needed to go was literally just a few steps away. Convenience wins!

Following the best view ever we met up with Dustin’s cousin at this spot called Kings. His buddy was djing and hooked us up with free bowling, drinks and food! We danced and bowled till about 1:00am then rested up for day two.

28136068000_ef2d0435c5_k

To start the second day off right we began it with a hearty meal at Ann Sather.  We had perused around Yelp but ultimately trusted the advice of our host and it was just what we needed (esp to kick that hangover…)

The original owner was Swedish so there’s bits of that background in the menu (meatballs!) but we also noticed a lot of Southern options, i.e. the biscuits and gravy Dustin chowed down on! Big portions, made from scratch all at low prices – speaking our language!

28136063540_7547ee1633_k

After the big breakfast we biked off all the carbs and headed to explore around the zoo. Our original itinerary didn’t include the zoo but upon learning it was free, we thought, ‘why the heck not..” I took a bunch of photos but you’ve all seen a camel and gorilla so I’ll save those for reminiscing.  We honestly couldn’t believe it was free! SO so good. Really great primate exhibit and they seemed so happy and had tons of room.

28136066840_3685adb236_k

I’m rocking my new Eye Buy Direct specs, Billabong kimono and Old Navy dress. D’s wearing Warby Parkers and an Old Navy shirt.

After the zoo it was off to Goose Island Brewery!

28340091541_b4e035cd2d_k

28136069970_a2b5d9ddd4_k

28314011152_866c93bc78_k

The location was in a vacant, almost industrial part of town. There wasn’t a soul in sight on our walk to get there until we got right up to the brewery.  We didn’t feel unsafe or anything but I just kept thinking, ok, is this place real and will it be open?

28136073440_766a273a09_k

OPEN FOR SIPPING!

27802010964_bf083730aa_k

Unfortunately the tours were sold out but we’ve been through plenty of breweries so we didn’t worry about it and got right to the tasting.  They had several taproom only offerings which happen to be my favorites! Unlike a lot of breweries they don’t do a “flight” so we made up our own with half pours and sharing.

Our selections
Summertime
Sofie~have had before, easy drinking
312~good wheat beer, one of D’s all time favorite
Four Stars Pils~another easy drinker. light and crisp.

(Exclusives)
MW X SW~the pretty, almost red/pink one. sweet but not too sweet. 8oz was just enough.
Rauchkeller~def lived up to the smoked characteristic, I liked, Dustin thought it was a little much
Gillian~we love Farmhouses! did not disappoint.

Such a shame we couldn’t take a growler of a special one home! Def a must visit if you’re a beer lover like us.

Next on the days schedule was the architectural boat tour!

27801994974_53bb2939e0_k (1)

Needless to say after the brewery we were pretty buzzed but I’d like to think that made the boat tour even better! This very touristy activity came highly recommended by friends and I don’t mind one bit doing some tourist things from time to time, especially when it’s on a BOAT!

28136056820_cf12410401_k

It was so cool seeing some of the biggest and tallest buildings from the water. We learned so much about the city and having recently read The Devil in the White City (well, most of it) it was even cooler hearing about landmarks from the World’s Fair. One of the facts that made us laugh was that Chicago got it’s name from the Native Americans who thought it was stinky and “smelled of onions.”

27801994974_53bb2939e0_k (2)

For the duration of the tour we hung out on the roof but the bottom was so pretty, and had a bar, so I went exploring while still listening to the guide.

28349073162_4d88a03de4_k

I loved this photo too much to not include because of a certain building in the background…Though it does say “AMERICA” if I do say so myself…

After the tour we went home to freshen up and grab dinner then met up with Dustin’s brother who was visiting his girlfriend who’s interning at the John Hancock building at a spot called Delilah’s.

13528693_10104135392936475_3986609929900041041_n

Can you tell who’s related?

Meal we ate was SO INCREDIBLY GOOD we didn’t take any photos before we scarfed it down. Place was called Ba-Ba-Reeba and served up the best tapas I’ve ever had. The margaritas were also on point. First two days were a blast! Hard to believe it got better..more posts coming soon!

*sidenote* Photos were taken with iPhone 6+ and a rented Sony RX100 IV from PPR here in Atlanta. Renting and trying something new was fun but there were things I loved about it and things I’m kinda “meh” about.   Now wishing I would have just brought my Mark II and just dealt with the weight. Oh well, thought I wanted to buy the little guy but now thinking the Mark is my go-to for life. Canon for the win.

Have a great weekend!

Come back to see part 2 <3

ADVENTURING IN ASHEVILLE

For Valentines I surprised Dustin with a getaway trip to Asheville for camper hangs, breweries and bar-b-que! We left work early on Friday and made it around 4 in time to see the Silver Bette in the daylight, just look at how adorable she is!

I didn’t feel like fooling with my DSLR so I snapped all weekend long using my Iphone, not mad how the photos turned out either! Here goes our full recap, with first a tour of our home away from home on wheels –

Our Spartan was manufactured in 1955 by the Spartan Aircraft Company who made their start making war planes during WWII. After the war Spartan began making these huge luxury rolling caravan’s. The first Spartan Camper was made in 1948 and the last Spartan was manufactured in the early 60’s before the company closed it’s doors for good in Tulsa Oklahoma. The Bettie is similar to an airstream, but with MUCH more headroom and space inside and with even more history! –Air Bnb post

Bette had a full kitchen complete with retro pots and pans for cooking. Not pictured is the old school crimson fridge with the most adorable ice box (aka freezer) inside!

There was a TV but we didn’t bother turning it on, just listened to classic rock on the little radio on the left.

After we explored and unpacked we went to Haywood St. for pre-dinner drinks and apps at Oyster House Brewing. We split a dozen raw oysters, a new acquired taste of my adult tongue, and each had a beer before going to our dinner destination Buffalo Nickel.  We had deviled eggs, Dustin’s all time favorite food, they were yummy and got his seal of approval. For dinner I got the pumpkin ravioli that had lump crap, cranberry, brussels petals, mushrooms, brown butter, sage and lemon-HELLO DELICIOUS! They made the sage like kale chips, not sure how but it was very impressive. Dustin got the North Carolina shrimp- tasso ham, October beans, shellfish tomato broth, grits and fennel. He said it was the best shrimp and grits he’s ever had! I had a bit and would agree, wow!  After dinner we moved over to the game room side and played some pool and darts with locals. A restaurant with games is a winner in my book!

The following day we started with brunch at Sunny Pointe Cafe which came highly recommended.  We were warned about the wait but were told it was worth it. So we toughed out the hour and something wait and they were right, WORTH IT!

HELLO BEST HEUVOS RANCHEROS EVER!

Savory black bean cakes served with Snow Creek chorizo sausage, feta cheese, roasted tomatillo salsa, and herb tossed spuds topped with two free range eggs any style, cilantro crema, and crisp tortilla strips.

Seriously though. That dish went above and beyond. We also really liked the biscuits and gravy and had a bunch of leftovers that we threw all together (with some bbq) and had for brunch Sunday. Have I mentioned breakfast/brunch is by far my favorite meal?

Also, this bloody mary was gorgeous. Dustin said it tasted real good too. I can’t mix tomato juice and coffee but if I could I would have been all about it. Server said they picked the ingredients from their very own garden!

Going out of order here but keeping with the food theme…Buxton BBQ! I had seen this pop up a few times during my web searching and could tell by the menu and graphic design work, it was up our alley. We ate an early dinner here after brewery hoping. After the huge brunch we skipped lunch and were about starved and that’s when we spotted the HASH FRIES. A mound of waffle fries topped with bbq hash, buttermilk gravy and pimento cheese! We died and went to a smothered-n-covered heaven! We sipped local brews before our dinner came which looked something like this:

When it comes to bbq joints Dustin and I both usually get a pulled pork plate. Then I usually order the beans and whatever else sounds good.  We knew our dinner would be fantastic after the devouring of the hash fries and it really was, especially the brussels sprouts!

If you can believe it, we had made room for dessert. It just didn’t feel right leaving without trying the banana pudding pie. Despite the full belly ache that followed, it was so worth it! What made it stand out was the salted graham cracker crust. Mmmmm

We sat at the bar to avoid waiting which gave us THIS view. Open ceilings, exposed bricks, unenclosed kitchen-like being in a big loft!

Now on to brewery hopping!

Not in order but here’s where we went and how we felt about it –

Lexington Ave Brewery – Dustin fell hard in love with their “Thumper” Belgian Tripel. He said it was his all-time favorite of the trip.

One World Brewing – This was an accidental discovery when we were walking to a different destination and HAD to seek warmth. Glad we needed the heat because this little underground brewery was a good find! We both enjoyed the farmhouse ale.

Bhramari – New to the brewery scene and was only serving one of their own beers, the Carolina Common, producing notes of caramel and sweet corn. Tasty! This was another spot we stumbled in for warmth. We are never strict schedule followers so popping into unplanned breweries was fun to us!

Catawba – Is next door to Buxton BBQ and has the same open floor plan with lots of different seating areas, some made of old barrels. We were too full after the BBQ so we split the White Zombie White Ale but at dinner had tried the Farmer Ted Cream Ale which made my top picks list.

Funkatorium- The funkier side to Wicked Weed and the East Coast’s first ever sour dedicated taproom! This was our favorite stop! I wish we had gone there earlier (it was the last stop of Saturday night and I was tired) but when we return it’ll be our FIRST revisit location!

Wedge- We got a small flight of 4 and gravitated towards the smoky ALT bier “sticke” which is a Dusseldorf style. The tasting room is small but the outside area is it’s selling point. Too bad it was a high of 22 degrees otherwise we would have been all about the corn hole!

Thirsty Monk – Not sure how many beers they actually brew but they were only serving 3 of their own that day. I got the blonde and Dustin got the barley wine style ale.  He likes this type of beer a lot and thought theirs was on point. The blonde was easy drinking. They have a lot of other people’s beer on tap but not sure we’ll go back. Feel like there’s better breweries to hit up.

Wicked Weed- This place is popular! The first attempt of visiting was a flop because they were at capacity and had a long line of people waiting to get in. Waiting in 20 degree temperatures with a wind chill that made it feel like the teens-no way jose! We went back the next day. I tried the Orange Peel-named after the neighboring music venue-and thought it was just OK. Dustin got something aged in bourbon barrels and liked it a lot. Now that I’m thinking of it, I don’t think Dustin met a beer he didn’t like, HA! My coworker had an old friend that worked there that I tracked down and he gave us some samples that were tasty.  Next time it’d be nice to fully experience this spot as well.

Of all the beers we tried we felt like the most unique were the sours from Funkatorium so we brought home three! The La Bonte with figs, the Oaxacan that’s aged in tequila barrels and the bourbon oblivion.  How cool is that carrying case!?

Aside from breweries, we popped into a few boutiques I had found after researching online. In downtown we went to Old North, a rad shop for men and women.  We found Dustin a handsome short-sleeved gingham shirt that’ll be real nice when it gets warmer. Also went into the best antique shop I’ve been in a while, Lexington Park Antiques. You could seriously get lost in there for hours!  Horse + Hero has fun art and for cute gifts hit up Whist and Duncan & York.  My favorite non-beer stop was Flora, a flower and plant boutique that also specializes in wedding and event styling and floral design. JUST LOOK!!! >>>

We popped in on Valentines Day.  I picked out a small planter and air plant. When we were checking out I was asked “want me to doll this up?” YES PLEASE! The gal filled the planter with rocks for the air plant to rest on and then handed me the above bag with a sweet corsage attached. Man, I just love places that go above and beyond! It’s currently drying out because it’s too pretty to toss. Flora is a must visit! As well as Asheville, but maybe when it’s a little warmer!
