SUMMER ESSENTIAL

19623984996_46cf923006_k

Y’all, I’m addicted to watermelon! I’ve been eating my weight in the stuff and can’t be stopped! Must have something to do with them being in peak ripeness which is also why July has been named National Watermelon Month!  At one point last week, I had four, yes, four whole watermelons at the house! Favorite way to eat is just go in, face first on a slice but we’ve also enjoyed several batches of salad using fresh mint, goat cheese, purple onions with a dash of balsamic vinegar. I recently pinned this recipe and would love to try and grill some!

When I was in Nashville I picked up the pretty one above at a small farmers market and we cut into it last week. It’s a lot more flavorful than the regular ones and prettier but whether they come from Kroger or a farm, they are filling and hydrating and my current go-to!

In case you’re interested to know, here’s some fun facts about my #1 snack via Mercola.com

-It’s both a fruit and a vegetable! (Like a tomato, only watermelons have more lycopene which is a great cancer fighter-more on that here)
-Both the seeds and rind are completely edible! (In fact, the rind has a TON of vitamins and can be made into smoothies)
-They are made of 91% water! (Well duh. But still, next time you’re at trivia, you’ll get the % correct)
-Rich in anti-inflammatory substances! (Get out of here sore muscles!)

Tips for picking the perfect melon:

-Look for the spot where it sits on the ground, should be pale and yellowish not white or green
-Should be heavy for it’s size (this one felt like it weighed a 100lbs!)

I don’t know about you, but now I’m craving some, good thing we still have plenty at home!

KINFOLK SUPPER

19478283155_c7d4795d8f_k

For some time now I’ve badly wanted to attend a Kinfolk gathering.  From the stunning images I’ve gawked at on Instagram and following the magazine online, each event looks like the perfect mixture of quaint and magical combined!  So, when the opportunity to attend a supper in Nashville presented itself to Courtney and I, we jumped on it!

The exact location of the event wasn’t known until a few days before and when Court saw the address she said “Jess, this is literally on the street I live on!” Which was cool and confusing. Was it a house? Barn she didn’t know of down the way? Confusion.  We didn’t care any which way it went we just got ready and called a Lift driver. We rode over with her friends, who I’m thankful to now consider my buddies, Rob and Leslie and their pup Doug.

A very short ride later, we arrived at a sweet little home, that really we could have walked to, it was that close! As we approached we were greeted by two guys who told us the party was in the back, so we moseyed on thru the path to the side of the house and arrived in the backyard to this:

Wow, right?!

We were in awe of the beautiful picnic style tables made by Ausden Inc. Nashville. We were in awe of the sun pouring into the backyard over the high fencing highlighting the perfectly manicured yard.  And we were in awe of how nice everyone was from the get-go!!

After introductions we selected which Bulleit cocktail we each wanted and then proceeded to take photos of everything.

I’m wearing an unconventional asymmetrical Urban Outfitters top, which was love at first sight, Joe’s Jeans, Frye sandles c/o of Shopbop, a Free People necklace and my favorite Kate Spade shades.

After we got our refreshments they brought out a slew of fancy cheeses and small bites served on beautiful wooden platters with the most precious mini plates I’ve ever seen!

Each attendee went home with a bunch of goodies, included was Brash coffee (which will soon be opening a location very close to my work, yay!) a candle and fancy matches from Candlefish, a branch weaving kit from Camellia Fiber Company, peach jam from The Peach Truck and bath salts from Local Milk. Best ‘swag bag’ EVER!

The star of the evening was Doug the Pug who is an international super star. Seriously this guy is famous! Look at him being all lumber sexual!

The evenings’ menu. My favorite was the dessert, and I’m not a huge sweets person, usually more into savory but that tart with the icecream was magic- so darn good! Second was the chilled peach soup, the ginger gave it the perfect kick.

Beth Kirby of Local Milk was the chef of the evening and made everything from scratch. I mean everything, even the butter!

Shout out to this lady who I’m so grateful to have met and gotten close to over the last year. She just redesigned her website, Realfoodology, be sure to give that a look. Love you Court!

After supper was concluded, it turned into a good ole backyard shindig where we sipped on a keg from Jackalope Brewing, listened to live music and stayed until we were the last folks besides the hosts, which is how I usually roll!

It’s too bad I didn’t get a photo of the full meal, well, I did but I didn’t like how it turned out. I was obviously sidetracked trying to talk and eat and guess I just didn’t take the time to make it look pretty. It sure as heck was yummy! Love me some trout!

Overall, my experience at my first and most definitely not last, Kinfolk supper was a great one! Besides having Dustin there, I don’t think it could have gone any better!

EXPLORING NASHVILLE

19140204730_544e9d5544_k

If you haven’t been to Nashville then you may not know that it has much more to offer than honky-tonks and college football, they actually have a really great coffee scene, that’s right. Coffee.

Last weekend I went up to visit my girl friend Courtney who had recently moved up there and she took me to several of their coffee shop hot spots that pride themselves on artfully crafted coffee.

First stop, Barista Parlor.

The venue is really interesting, it’s an old transmission shop turned into an open air spot to hang and work while sipping your beverage of choice while vinyl spins in the background.

All those fancy gadgets and handsome baristas produce a strong cold brew that’s sure to please pallets and awaken even the most hungover gals!

Oh and not to mention the decor, which included my favorite things: flags and taxidermy. Really reminds me of the shop here Brick + Mortar which I wrote about here.

Second stop was Crema near downtown.

Not only does Crema make their own coconut milk from scratch but they also make the most incredible avocado toast I’ve had, must recreate! (avocado, goat cheese, red pepper flakes, sprouts) Court said the granola was real tasty too. One thing we didn’t try, and I’m now regretting, was the coffee soda. Think: carbonated coffee. Heard it’s unreal.

We gave no craps about being touristy and taking pics in front of this mural, too good to pass up! I gotta say it: USA!

Me: Free People top, Gap shorts, UO hat, Birkenstocks, KMM&CO bag, FP necklace and Kate Spade shades. Court: Free People shades, romper and bag, H&M sandals

Next was hitting up Imogene + Willie.

I had been drooling over IG pics and blog posts about this shop and had to see it for myself.  Trust me when I say, it’s everything you’d hope it would be!

All of their oils and candles smelled heavenly, and look at those incense huts, adorable!

The staff was very friendly and, of course, stylish. One of these days I’ll get fitted in a pair of perfect, Southern crafted, jeans and wear them until they give out!

Not that either of us wear glasses, but I+W is a Warby Parker retailer and we couldn’t help but try on a few pairs. I fell for these “Jennings” and when I (finally) get my eyes checked, if there’s even the slightest chance I need glasses, I’ll be sporting these!

Other spots we ate at that I didn’t photograph: Local Taco + Burger Up + Koi, all very good! Other activities not yet mentioned, learning to “nay nay” and laughing a whole lot with Courtney and her friends that I now call my friends-good, good time!

Next up, the Slow Living Kinfolk Supper!

SNEAK PEEK: WEST ELM PONCE

west10

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the opening of the newest Atlanta West Elm, the 14,000 square foot Ponce City Market location!  The above photo is the living wall backdrop of their cashwrap. Nicole, the Director of PR for West Elm, explained to me that there’s an irrigation system installed in the reclaimed wood. Living artwork, how cool!

They salvaged the original floors and columns of the first tenants, Sears Roebuck. Read more about the history of Ponce City’s building on the trusty Wiki page here.

Local artist, Britt Bass, painted the art in the front window displays. She’s one of my favorites and definitely has West Elm vibes so her work fit in perfectly with the merchandise.

west6

Can’t beat natural light and high ceilings!

The decor I favored most were the deep shades of navy and crisp whites. As it so happens, these are our wedding colors too! Additionally, we are registered at West Elm. Just putting that out there, heheh.

This location will be the third of it’s kind in the US with it’s Market that will brew local coffee as well as sell Market will include a coffee shop and an extension of West Elm’s kitchen, personal care, homescent, gifting, food and bath assortment.

One of the many many reasons I love West Elm is their support for local talent. In this shop alone they feature and sell 15 Georgia artisan’s goods. To see the full list, click here.

This store may be huge but since the merchandisers cleverly packed all 14,000 sqft. it makes it feel cozy and not like you’re perusing around a big, empty warehouse. Everywhere you turn, there are different vibes sure to please anyone’s style!

Hope you enjoyed my little preview of the store! Get over there and see for yourself!

HONEYMOON PLANNING: TULUM

sincerely_jules
After a lot of debating between here and there we decided to go with Tulum, Mexico for our honeymoon!

The other spots we tossed around were Costa Rica and Greece but Mexico won for many reasons. Ultimately, we decided we wanted to go to Greece, however, November isn’t the best time to go. Rather then spend all of our money on a Costa Rica trip we came up with the game plan to do a cheaper and easier trip now and save some of our honeyfund to visit Greece when it’s prime time to go in mid-May of 2016.

Last week we bought our plane tickets and this week we are working on nailing down our hotels.  We want to skip around and maybe even stay in Playa Del Carmen since it’s in between Cancun (where the airport is) and Tulum.

The top hotels that are in the running are Coqui Coqui, Ahau Tulum and Casa de las Olas.  Still perusing just in case I missed a goodie and also open to suggestions!

Adorable map by The Kitchy Kitchen, she also has an impressive guide here.

Below are images that I found while doing research on Tulum that got me very excited about our trip-

So much charm in this little beach town!

Things we are excited to do: swim in the cenotes, check out Mayan ruins, eat all the tacos, drink all the margaritas, chill, spear fish (Dustin), snorkel, watch the sun set, buy local goods and whatever other adventures we stumble upon!

Let the countdown begin! 131 days to be exact!
