WEDDING TIME + OUR STORY

Tomorrow we’ll be heading to Tallapoosa, GA for our wedding weekend! I can’t believe it’s here! We’ve been engaged for a year and three months and it’s almost go time!

If you’re wondering if I’m freaking out that answer (today) is…..sorta but not really. Since we’ve had all this time to prepare we chipped away at the to-dos one by one over time so there’s only a small list left (nails + pick up flowers, we are DIY’n!)

The whole experience has been pretty chill! My handsome husband-to-be has helped with stuff and even opted to make part of his groomsmen gifts, which makes him even more swoony!

(took this photo at the Party at Ponce event, the lighting was too good!)

We worked on other projects last night and today we took half days to complete the list so that tomorrow will be as stress-free as possible and then Saturday we’ll be able to float through the day while other people handle all the tasks, and then….

We’ll be husband and wife, ah!

Tomorrow’s rehearsal dinner is going to be fun. We didn’t have many options in the area around the venue but Dustin and his mom found this fun place called The Little Hawaiian that could host our large party and so, we’re having a luau! A Halloween weekend luau. Doesn’t get more random, love it!

I’ve got a million things on my mind, and feeling a little too cloudy to write down all my feelings but I thought for now I’d share our story (again) if you haven’t already read or heard it in person <3

Here is our story-

Dustin and I met at the first Shaky Knees Music Festival on May 4th 2013.  It had been heavily raining all day and we managed to stick it out but were both alone listening to Band of Horses. I was huddled under a broken umbrella and struggling to shield myself from the water when Dustin leaned in and asked if I could use some help. I accepted and let him fiddle with the broken piece and after he got it sorta held more upright I invited him under to seek shelter from the unrelenting rain.  I began to ask him questions about himself and we got to know a little bit about one another. At one point he was staring so deeply into my eyes I asked “what?” and he leaned in and kissed me. Just like that! In the rain, during Band of Horses, at his first ever music festival. BOOM. And then I told him I had a boyfriend…

However, the relationship wasn’t in a good spot and I knew the inevitable was about to happen and I’d be single so I gave him my number. We ended up hanging around and chatting under a more legit tent and stayed under security left, we were the very last concert attendees! We went our separate ways not knowing if we would ever see one another again.

A week later I was single and another week later I heard from Dustin. It was friendly texting back and forth until I informed him I was no longer in another relationship and we made plans to go on a date. He asked “would you like to get coffee” and I said “no, lets grab a beer!” so we met at TAP on Peachtree for what would be our first and last first date. We have been inseparable ever since!

Dustin told me months later, that on that first night at Shaky Knees when he was standing behind me and saw a glimpse of my face, a thought came out of no where that there, in front of him was the girl he was going to marry. The next thought was “well, I guess I need to talk to her” and the umbrella was the ‘excuse.’ So glad this shy guy didn’t hold back and asked to help, thanks umbrella!

I just love our meeting story and telling it doesn’t get old!

(he turned the camera on me because the light was seriously, that good!)

Though I’m tired and busy-minded, I am clear headed enough to say that I’m pretty dang stoked to be joining forces with someone who loves me through and through, puts up with my very bad indecisiveness, who’s up for any last minute adventures I throw out there, lover of cats, leftovers and vinyl records plus a million other reasons!  Dustin, I can’t wait to be your wife!

This is my last post before we do this thang and then zoom off to Mexico for our honeymoon in Tulum. Rest assured there will be so many posts filled with all the feelings and adventure recaps! Wish us luck!

Best, the future Mrs. Winchester <3

This week I don’t have an outfit or food post but I do want to share some favorite moments from life lately~

Above is the lovely backdrop of my wedding shower! My bridesmaids held the event at one of their homes and made my boho dreams come true! I’m a lucky lady when it comes to friendships, truly lucky.

We decided this year to skip Music Midtown and then at the last minute our friend Courtney hooked us up with a free pass for Friday. We rode our bikes from the house – around 4 miles each way – made attending and exiting a breeze!

We saw Metric and Elton John, both of which, killed it. Metric was upbeat and we turned it into a 3 person (Me + D + Muriel) dance party and Elton was, FANTASTIC. Definitely a bucket list moment!

VSCO partnered up with Artifact Uprising and gave away a free print and I got this photo from our engagement shoot in an 8.5×11. I was blown away with the quality! We are going to frame for our little home.

Speaking of great quality and Muriel, this tote basket is a recent gift from her trip to Morocco! Her and her bf were traveling for about two weeks and picked this up on like the second day, it then went from Morocco to Spain and then to ATL – it’s well-traveled already!

BEYOND THE BASICS WITH WILLIAMS-SONOMA

Atlanta recently welcomed a new Williams-Sonoma located inside the wildly popular Ponce City Market and it’s a first of it’s kind in the South! What makes it unique is the comprehensive home showroom and design center.  It also features a direct pass-through to Chef Jonathan Waxman’s latest dining venture, Brezza Cucina-

A glass wall strategically placed between the restaurant and Williams-Sonoma will offer guests an immersive culinary experience with an exclusive view into the dining room, while simultaneously lending inspiration while they shop. This type floor plan is the first in Williams-Sonoma’s history with an independent business.

21466085656_d1d1e73589_kI’m super thrilled to share my partnering with W+S hoping to inform couples that are planning their registry that you can go beyond the basics and have a new experience with their wedding registry through their unique departments! For example, they have an entire DIY section which includes kits to make your own cheese, alcohol and even bacon! They also carry a ton of gardening supplies for that new home you’ll be settling into, or their convenient above-ground gardens if you’re renting.

With marriage comes combining not only your lives but your activities so why not add some spice with some of these gift ideas versus the pots and pans folks normally have on their registry.  Unless you need updated cookware-then you’re in good hands with W+S!

Our W+S Beyond the Basics picks:

Waxed canvas camping bag
Poler 2-person Waterproof Camo Tent
Lodge Camping Dutch Oven
Lodge Camping Tripod (for Dutch oven)
Enamelware Dinnerware bowls + mugs
Smart Phone Recharger with Flashlight
Antler Fire Starter
Telescoping Skewers

We are really happy with this tent for several reasons; the one-pole systems offers an easy non-confrontational setup so you can get in and enjoy the high ceilings that make for perfect hanging out with your beau. It’s also “camouflage” so you can “blend” in and do your thing without, say a bear or wanderer finding you!

In our new Dutch oven I made an easy version of chicken pot pie, here’s the recipe:

Frozen veg-all
Chicken
Canned biscuits
Chicken broth + condensed soup

Spread veg-all in bottom, top with chicken and then pour in the broth and soup. Top with biscuits and close. Place oven on top of coals and then place coals on top of oven (see above photo). We cooked for 45 minutes which burned the tops so we figure 30 is perfect! Enjoy.

Handling the oven: we used a hammer (the part that pulls out the nails) to lift the lid, seems to be the best option. I’m not sure if the traditional oven mitt will withstand the heat so proceed with caution!

21466081486_b86fef8903_k

Right before my marshmallow caught on fire and we went into ‘save the ‘mallow!!” mode! I wasn’t worried about getting burned though since the telescoping skewers make it real safe to cook on open flames.

Pro-tip from my Eagle Scout fiance: “You wanna wait till the fire is more coals than flames, it will give you a more evenly cooked marshmallow and you’ll avoid it catching fire.”

But, we (read: I) weren’t that patient this particular day, ha!

Free People tee, Gap jeans, Sorel boots and TOMS shades.

This Wood and Faulk bag is not only stylish but very durable with the waxed canvas and leather, it’s sure to withstand all sorts of conditions! Also, Dustin has it in green so now we match and that’s just adorable!

The flashlight + charging station is a must-bring on all future camping trips! Gotta be able to IG our trip ;)

My man being all hunky and happy in our new tent which we’ll be taking for a real deal spin first weekend of October!

Lastly, here are some fun happenings going on over at the Ponce City W+S:

Atlantans are invited every Saturday for free technique classes at the modern, twelve-seat cooking island in the center of the store hosted by Williams-Sonoma culinary specialist Jon Lagardere. Younger aspiring cooks are invited to the store every Sunday for free Junior Chef Classes.  Williams-Sonoma has partnered with over 50 artisanal, small-batch food producers throughout the country as part of the company’s commitment to community at the new Ponce City Market location. The assortment will include featured representation of artisans from Atlanta and throughout the South.

Thanks to Williams-Sonoma for allowing us a fun opportunity and an excuse to go on all the camping trips this Fall!

Special thanks to Cristi who shot the photos of us!  Check out her site here.

DIY WEDDING INVITATIONS

20280149943_dfcdb460ff_k

In the same fashion that we did our save-the-dates, we are DIY’n the formal invitations using another custom stamp by local stamp-maker, Native Bear. The stamp decision was made long ago but the paper decision was a little more difficult to decide on. Originally I thought I wanted to dip dye watercolor paper with indigo dye but after hearing that it can rub off on your hands and clothes, I nixed that idea. Then I experimented with an ombre’ effect using watercolor and wasn’t totally satisfied with that outcome soooo I went with another idea-

Cyanotypes!

I had first encountered cyanotypes during a Root City Market at one of the interactive booths they have set up for kids (and adults like me that like to craft!) and had fun with the freedom to play around with negative space and loved the bold blue end result. So mom and I ordered 200 5×7 cards from Cyanotype Store and completed step one of our custom invites!

The process is ridiculously easy but here are some pretty step-by-step photos and at the end I’ll share some tips + lessons learned the hard way!

20891447642_4c5f97b3a7_k

First step is to pick out what types of plants and materials you want to use. I stuck with plants but the possibilities are endless! Mass Collective, the folks behind the first time I did a cyanotype, had everything from rice to plastic toy animals. Other things you could use are letters, feathers, fossils, paper cut-outs such as a doily and really anything else your heart desires! Just remember, anything solid is going to be white, so if it’s just a big solid object that’s going to be a lot of positive space in the print.

20714392429_97a3d7f91c_k

Since the paper is very sensitive to light they come in a black plastic bag that you’ll want to keep them in right up until the very moment you’re ready with the materials you want to place on the paper.

After you set the object on the paper, let it expose in the sun. Time will vary depending on the sun intensity. Overcast=longer. Directions said 10-15 minutes but that was way too long for ours since the sun was crazy intense that day. Expose until the paper turns a sky blue and don’t expose too long or it’ll turn white and then the whole print will just be blue.

The thicker foliage turned out better in my opinion. I liked the prints with the rosemary and whatever plant that is in the upper right-hand corner. But adding specs of little details is also a nice touch. You can also move things around and get lighter effects and double-exposure.

Remember, the freedom is all yours! Well, as long as you have lots of prints to experiment with, we bought more than we needed in case some didn’t work out, and I’m glad we did. There were a bunch of duds.

20891456422_7f6c4ab73e_k

Next up is to rinse. Once the print is exposed how you like, take the paper and place in a tray of regular water.

Tip: Don’t push from the middle of the piece of paper but instead cut in by “diving” one edge of the paper into the water and letting it rinse over the image *I don’t know how else to word this but basically make the plunge as even across the print as possible.

The water stops the developing so when you hang them the clothespin shouldn’t make a mark on the print. But if this worries you, scroll down and read the tips about how-to dry.

20901161435_d5e7898de8_k

How gorgeous, right??? We are so happy with the outcome and how each are completely unique to the next!

The paper has a pretty texture to it as well, sort of like watercolor paper, and the color turned out perfectly.

20901155025_ee7ec2f0c2_k

Lessons learned:

-Even though I mentioned this above, I want to reiterate: Don’t expose TOO long. If the paper turns white, it’ll be all blue. The directions say 10-15 but I’d say to judge by the sun. On this day it was extremely sunny and so we didn’t have to expose nearly as long as the directions.

-If doing a big batch, change water frequently.  Also, we thought having the water in the shade was better, not scientifically proven, but we thought it made a difference with stopping the exposure.

-When prints are in the water, don’t let them overlap, this’ll cause lines and odd exposures. And also don’t let them sit on top of the water un-submerged completely because they’ll shrivel up (almost like a wilting effect).

-If you’re using real plants you’ll want to have plenty and keep some in water because they’ll wilt in the sun. We had clovers but they wilted so fast we couldn’t really use.

-Don’t dry on flat surface, a grated rack is better or hanging from a line of string. If none of these are available, laying papertowels on a flat surface will do fine, just change them regularly as they’ll get pretty wet and not allow the print to dry.

DO NOT DRIP ON ANYTHING OF IMPORTANCE. We did this in the front lawn and I hung all the prints on the porch, thus dripping all over the place, and even though I rinsed it thoroughly afterwards with the hose, it looks like a bad tie dye job! Apparently, the water that drips off carries the indigo-colored ink with it. I think what happened was that even though I rinsed, the sun ended up exposing the droplets.

Next step for us is to stamp each cyanotype with our wedding stamp and get them out the door!

HONEYMOON PLANNING: TULUM

sincerely_jules
After a lot of debating between here and there we decided to go with Tulum, Mexico for our honeymoon!

The other spots we tossed around were Costa Rica and Greece but Mexico won for many reasons. Ultimately, we decided we wanted to go to Greece, however, November isn’t the best time to go. Rather then spend all of our money on a Costa Rica trip we came up with the game plan to do a cheaper and easier trip now and save some of our honeyfund to visit Greece when it’s prime time to go in mid-May of 2016.

Last week we bought our plane tickets and this week we are working on nailing down our hotels.  We want to skip around and maybe even stay in Playa Del Carmen since it’s in between Cancun (where the airport is) and Tulum.

The top hotels that are in the running are Coqui Coqui, Ahau Tulum and Casa de las Olas.  Still perusing just in case I missed a goodie and also open to suggestions!

Adorable map by The Kitchy Kitchen, she also has an impressive guide here.

Below are images that I found while doing research on Tulum that got me very excited about our trip-

So much charm in this little beach town!

Things we are excited to do: swim in the cenotes, check out Mayan ruins, eat all the tacos, drink all the margaritas, chill, spear fish (Dustin), snorkel, watch the sun set, buy local goods and whatever other adventures we stumble upon!

Let the countdown begin! 131 days to be exact!
