We have a packed schedule! Goes something like this: The High Museum tonight, tomorrow going glasses shopping (yep, found out I have astigmatism and need specs) followed by snapping a surprise proposal, then Sunday we are going to Oysterfest and an Oscars party.

ADVENTURING IN ASHEVILLE

For Valentines I surprised Dustin with a getaway trip to Asheville for camper hangs, breweries and bar-b-que! We left work early on Friday and made it around 4 in time to see the Silver Bette in the daylight, just look at how adorable she is!

I didn’t feel like fooling with my DSLR so I snapped all weekend long using my Iphone, not mad how the photos turned out either! Here goes our full recap, with first a tour of our home away from home on wheels –

Our Spartan was manufactured in 1955 by the Spartan Aircraft Company who made their start making war planes during WWII. After the war Spartan began making these huge luxury rolling caravan’s. The first Spartan Camper was made in 1948 and the last Spartan was manufactured in the early 60’s before the company closed it’s doors for good in Tulsa Oklahoma. The Bettie is similar to an airstream, but with MUCH more headroom and space inside and with even more history! –Air Bnb post

Bette had a full kitchen complete with retro pots and pans for cooking. Not pictured is the old school crimson fridge with the most adorable ice box (aka freezer) inside!

There was a TV but we didn’t bother turning it on, just listened to classic rock on the little radio on the left.

After we explored and unpacked we went to Haywood St. for pre-dinner drinks and apps at Oyster House Brewing. We split a dozen raw oysters, a new acquired taste of my adult tongue, and each had a beer before going to our dinner destination Buffalo Nickel.  We had deviled eggs, Dustin’s all time favorite food, they were yummy and got his seal of approval. For dinner I got the pumpkin ravioli that had lump crap, cranberry, brussels petals, mushrooms, brown butter, sage and lemon-HELLO DELICIOUS! They made the sage like kale chips, not sure how but it was very impressive. Dustin got the North Carolina shrimp- tasso ham, October beans, shellfish tomato broth, grits and fennel. He said it was the best shrimp and grits he’s ever had! I had a bit and would agree, wow!  After dinner we moved over to the game room side and played some pool and darts with locals. A restaurant with games is a winner in my book!

The following day we started with brunch at Sunny Pointe Cafe which came highly recommended.  We were warned about the wait but were told it was worth it. So we toughed out the hour and something wait and they were right, WORTH IT!

HELLO BEST HEUVOS RANCHEROS EVER!

Savory black bean cakes served with Snow Creek chorizo sausage, feta cheese, roasted tomatillo salsa, and herb tossed spuds topped with two free range eggs any style, cilantro crema, and crisp tortilla strips.

Seriously though. That dish went above and beyond. We also really liked the biscuits and gravy and had a bunch of leftovers that we threw all together (with some bbq) and had for brunch Sunday. Have I mentioned breakfast/brunch is by far my favorite meal?

Also, this bloody mary was gorgeous. Dustin said it tasted real good too. I can’t mix tomato juice and coffee but if I could I would have been all about it. Server said they picked the ingredients from their very own garden!

Going out of order here but keeping with the food theme…Buxton BBQ! I had seen this pop up a few times during my web searching and could tell by the menu and graphic design work, it was up our alley. We ate an early dinner here after brewery hoping. After the huge brunch we skipped lunch and were about starved and that’s when we spotted the HASH FRIES. A mound of waffle fries topped with bbq hash, buttermilk gravy and pimento cheese! We died and went to a smothered-n-covered heaven! We sipped local brews before our dinner came which looked something like this:

When it comes to bbq joints Dustin and I both usually get a pulled pork plate. Then I usually order the beans and whatever else sounds good.  We knew our dinner would be fantastic after the devouring of the hash fries and it really was, especially the brussels sprouts!

If you can believe it, we had made room for dessert. It just didn’t feel right leaving without trying the banana pudding pie. Despite the full belly ache that followed, it was so worth it! What made it stand out was the salted graham cracker crust. Mmmmm

We sat at the bar to avoid waiting which gave us THIS view. Open ceilings, exposed bricks, unenclosed kitchen-like being in a big loft!

Now on to brewery hopping!

Not in order but here’s where we went and how we felt about it –

Lexington Ave Brewery – Dustin fell hard in love with their “Thumper” Belgian Tripel. He said it was his all-time favorite of the trip.

One World Brewing – This was an accidental discovery when we were walking to a different destination and HAD to seek warmth. Glad we needed the heat because this little underground brewery was a good find! We both enjoyed the farmhouse ale.

Bhramari – New to the brewery scene and was only serving one of their own beers, the Carolina Common, producing notes of caramel and sweet corn. Tasty! This was another spot we stumbled in for warmth. We are never strict schedule followers so popping into unplanned breweries was fun to us!

Catawba – Is next door to Buxton BBQ and has the same open floor plan with lots of different seating areas, some made of old barrels. We were too full after the BBQ so we split the White Zombie White Ale but at dinner had tried the Farmer Ted Cream Ale which made my top picks list.

Funkatorium- The funkier side to Wicked Weed and the East Coast’s first ever sour dedicated taproom! This was our favorite stop! I wish we had gone there earlier (it was the last stop of Saturday night and I was tired) but when we return it’ll be our FIRST revisit location!

Wedge- We got a small flight of 4 and gravitated towards the smoky ALT bier “sticke” which is a Dusseldorf style. The tasting room is small but the outside area is it’s selling point. Too bad it was a high of 22 degrees otherwise we would have been all about the corn hole!

Thirsty Monk – Not sure how many beers they actually brew but they were only serving 3 of their own that day. I got the blonde and Dustin got the barley wine style ale.  He likes this type of beer a lot and thought theirs was on point. The blonde was easy drinking. They have a lot of other people’s beer on tap but not sure we’ll go back. Feel like there’s better breweries to hit up.

Wicked Weed- This place is popular! The first attempt of visiting was a flop because they were at capacity and had a long line of people waiting to get in. Waiting in 20 degree temperatures with a wind chill that made it feel like the teens-no way jose! We went back the next day. I tried the Orange Peel-named after the neighboring music venue-and thought it was just OK. Dustin got something aged in bourbon barrels and liked it a lot. Now that I’m thinking of it, I don’t think Dustin met a beer he didn’t like, HA! My coworker had an old friend that worked there that I tracked down and he gave us some samples that were tasty.  Next time it’d be nice to fully experience this spot as well.

Of all the beers we tried we felt like the most unique were the sours from Funkatorium so we brought home three! The La Bonte with figs, the Oaxacan that’s aged in tequila barrels and the bourbon oblivion.  How cool is that carrying case!?

Aside from breweries, we popped into a few boutiques I had found after researching online. In downtown we went to Old North, a rad shop for men and women.  We found Dustin a handsome short-sleeved gingham shirt that’ll be real nice when it gets warmer. Also went into the best antique shop I’ve been in a while, Lexington Park Antiques. You could seriously get lost in there for hours!  Horse + Hero has fun art and for cute gifts hit up Whist and Duncan & York.  My favorite non-beer stop was Flora, a flower and plant boutique that also specializes in wedding and event styling and floral design. JUST LOOK!!! >>>

We popped in on Valentines Day.  I picked out a small planter and air plant. When we were checking out I was asked “want me to doll this up?” YES PLEASE! The gal filled the planter with rocks for the air plant to rest on and then handed me the above bag with a sweet corsage attached. Man, I just love places that go above and beyond! It’s currently drying out because it’s too pretty to toss. Flora is a must visit! As well as Asheville, but maybe when it’s a little warmer!

SMITH-WINCHESTER | THE PARTY

24849232521_5337812272_k

Lastly, the best part, THE PARTY!

After the ceremony we moved the guests up to the barn for happy hour and apps while Dustin and I finished up photos with our family. Then we made our grand entrance with a first dance as husband and wife. We chose our favorite song, “Closer” by St Lucia. It was unrehearsed and fun! We know all the lyrics and sang them to one another between laughs.

“I’ve got a feeling we will never get closer than this
I can’t imagine there’s a way to get closer than this”

-Seemed very appropriate!

Following our dance and mingling for a 15-20 minutes Dustin and I each grabbed a signature cocktail and went off and had that private meal I talked about in this post.

Our caterer was the wildly popular and local Sun in My Belly. They did a fantastic job with not only the food but also the set up and handling of the flow.  I know that people want to make you feel good about your wedding but we had sooooo many attendees tell us the food was the best they’ve ever had at a wedding and then tell us they weren’t just saying that! Seriously, they crushed the menu!

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

*All photos by Ben and Colleen except the above which was taken with my Iphone*

We didn’t get the photographers all the pieces to our suite in time but I wanted to share the calligraphy Sarah did for our menu and envelope!  Also shows our full menu. Our favorite app was the fried green tomato topped with pimento cheese and favorite entree was the shrimp and grits-can you tell we are both Southerners??!!

24311972284_72f5107674_k

Since our venue was over an hour outside of the city it made finding a wedding cake that didn’t require a $100-$150 travel fee difficult.  After lots and lots of email let downs I decided to go with an easier idea – multiple smaller cakes that could be easily transported. So glad we went with this route! We used Metro Bakery and asked friends to pick up for us. They were delicious and gave our guests plenty of options! I only tried two, the lemon zinger (lemon cake, raspberry filling, lemon cream cheese frosting) and cuatro leches (yellow cake soaked in four milks, kahlua buttercream frosting)-both moist and packed with flavor!

24647080920_e3b407f801_k24574940059_2afbeb8f17_k

We had the traditional list of speeches before the real party went down. Since it had started sprinkling and everyone was inside we all just stood around the barn making it more casual which I really liked!

24311968644_078eaa9540_k

Dustin and I love to dance and so do our friends! At one point they formed a circle around us and would jump in to have a dance with him, me or BOTH! So many special moments to cherish.

24824607612_e8a50c4b32_k24943620675_40be77a766_k

Not that we played much into it but we did get married on Halloween so I brought along some masks and hats from my workplace’s prop closet (I work at a studio!) mostly for the photobooth but they made their way onto the dance floor just as I had hoped!

Ben and Colleen had smoke bombs that we set off and though it was raining it turned out pretty cool!

My blonde bookends-brothers Brad and Buck!

24916289966_c9277b3857_k

Our photobooth was a makeshift creation. I made the background from leftover dud wedding invites and rented some lighting. We had difficulty getting the light to fire with the remote system so one of our photographers helped run it (yall rule!) Scrolling through all these photos was a riot!

That concludes the Smith – Winchester wedding! Sad to see it’s all done but the memories and photos will live on FORRREEVVVERRRRR!

SMITH-WINCHESTER WEDDING | THE CEREMONY

Now for the ceremony!

Before we walked down the isle we got in our group shots between all the Fall goodness happening in the front yard.  How great did everyone’s dresses look together??!!  Not only did it make things so easy but I love the outcome of giving the ladies the freedom to choose their style and fit!

24828009811_3e7ebd055f_k

And the men, not too shabby ay??!! We rented the suits and gave the ties as a gift along with the DIY’d clips.

24625850820_38d19b61ad_k24293182174_f40531e3cf_k

We had a fun bunch! Katherine suggested a soap scene, think we nailed it!

24921334755_8dc248020b_k24553717529_9d5881b67c_k

The scenery surrounding the ceremony site was too good to pass up, even with the threat of rain. To the left is a pond that the wedding party walked around up to the arbor (different angle in above photo)  Fell for all the unique touches when we were venue hunting!

24828000461_58c39cbbcf_k

Evan of Thicket Floral Designs, made my arbor dreams come true! Bet you’re wondering what the actual structure is, I didn’t have a clue until it was explained to me that it’s an old horse-drawn plow. We thought it was so unique and loved the idea of going a different route but still giving me the arbor I wanted.

Having Dad in the ride to the ceremony made for some special memories. He’s a big time goofball and was doing all these ridiculous things making me laugh which helped the nerves! I was sad that neither Dustin nor I had grandparents at the wedding but so grateful to have all our parents by our side.

24827984471_762703f236_k

There were aspects of our wedding that were non-traditional because well, we are millennials and that’s how we roll!  For example, our friend Kyle got certified and married us.  He added humor and kept the mood fun and relaxing-perfect man for the job!

24293207144_791623418f_k24553697569_3022734bbe_k

I’ll be honest, I was FREEZING! It really affected being able to remember the vows, haha! But we laughed our way through it and had a good time.

Speaking of vows, we did the whole hear and repeat deal.  We knew we’d both be full of so many emotions (I’m a wedding cryer) so we opted for the more chill route which was perfect!

Why does he have a slightly broken pink umbrella you ask…

It has to do with how we met, which was under that very umbrella at Shaky Knees Music Festival! Read all about it here.

SMITH-WINCHESTER WEDDING | THE DETAILS

24681599001_585e0a6fe2_k
Ben and Colleen took time to shoot the details that made up our wedding day.  I’m so thankful they did because many of the moments captured have backstory and hard work put into them.  First off, the above cyanotype invite that Mom and I put in lots of sweat (no blood or tears included but we came close) into, then Dustin worked long and hard to stamp. We love how they turned out! Blog post of how we did it, here.

Overjoyed with these up-close photos of our rings! Read all about how Dustin designed and proposed, here.

Dustin’s boutonnière made by the talented Evan Leggoe who is a local florist I commissioned to help with the floral work.

My earrings mom and I picked out from Belk that matched my bracelet making these my “something blue.”

The dress, the dress!

Headpiece I linked in the previous post, just perfect.

They made my shoes look so fancy! I went for comfort here folks, but really, I am happy with how they looked with the dress eeeeeven though I switched into my Chucks for the reception!

Like I mentioned above, Evan did our wedding as a freelance job. We met up and chatted about what I liked and from there she came up with a game plan and shopping list that I bought at a wholesale place in town.  Day before the wedding Dustin and I picked up the flowers and had them waiting for her at the venue. On the day of she did everything onsite and KILLED IT. Just wait till you see the arbor!

Dad and I pausing our goofing off for a pic in the cab before I walked down the isle. All these images give me so many feelings especially seeing this one and thinking about the feeling in my stomach during this very moment…

24146955904_3227945d89_k

Dustin made tie clips for his groomsmen and himself and I think you’d agree-they turned out great! Couple’a Google searches and a stamping kit and he was off! Love his DIY spirit!

24748886266_4309049aff_k

As you can see, we were racing some rain clouds but it all turned out just fine, no, perfect! It held off long enough for us to have a nearly full outdoor itinerary until having to move folks inside for the speeches. The reception followed so it wasn’t a big deal because everyone was already where they were supposed to be.

24681606571_e9f3d33715_k24146964444_57d90421c7_k

When it came to the reception decor I knew exactly what I wanted. Not joking when I say I illustrated out in Photoshop what I envisioned the tables looking like. Obviously couldn’t do it myself so it was left up to those organizing the florals and props and they (ahem, Evan) nailed it in every way!

When we were doing our portrait session I got a glimpse of the crew working on the tables and was over joyed because I realized it was all coming together flawlessly.

24657287692_11835e4753_k

The above photo is the wedding party table. We upgraded everything to give it a little more pizazz and though Dustin and I never got a chance to sit down*, it turned out exactly as my vision!

*Don’t feel sorry for us, we went off and had dinner quietly alone and enjoyed every single bite! D requested 15 minutes alone over dinner to enjoy the menu we picked out. Highly recommend brides to be!

Chargers, flatware and linens rented through Sun in my Belly and the sugar molds and decor rented through venue.

24148251863_7556ef6d67_k

The day after, we went back to the venue to grab some of our stuff giving me a chance to collect eucalyptus and other floral I wanted to dry out and keep. I mean, isn’t this plant just the best?!

Courtney said it best “the reception looked straight out of a Kinfolk magazine”
