MUSEUM DATE NIGHT

19676711159_b12e10b47d_k

A couple of months back Dustin and I bought a membership to the High Museum because we wanted to get in the habit of doing more diverse outings around town. You know, instead of just hitting up parties and dinners, but real talk…who doesn’t love those!?

On Friday we didn’t have plans and thought it was the perfect time to finally use our membership and hit up our friends-Cristi and Derek-way last minute and they were also into going.  We love us some double dates!

Originally we wanted to see several of the exhibits inside but after arriving we quickly got distracted by the performance happening around the Sifly Piassa (ps it’s free and open the public so you could make a night of just hanging around there)

The distraction was the vibrant Los Trompos exhibit by contemporary Mexican designers Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena.  It’s the High’s second large-scale interactive outdoor exhibit and definitely my favorite!  The colorfully woven hut-like creations were so fun and everyone from small children to sweet older couples were enjoying them, including us! Dustin spun me around a few times as I held on to the exterior for dear life (seriously, my guy is strong!)

We happened to go on a night when local sound and composer artist, Ben Coleman, was performing his reaction to the exhibit called “Zoetrope.”  It created a “playground for happy eyes and ears”  (via High.org) and made us feel like well-dressed kids playing in public! Pictured here are the “tame moments” haha, hope you like Dustin’s creative vision of tonights outfit post!

Side note: this Billabong coverup is one of my favorite pieces in my closet! And just between us, it was way to hot to wear it, sorta dying here!

My outfit includes a Billabong kimono, Free People tank, TOMS sunglasses, Mother denim jeans, Madewell necklace and Naya sandles.

We really did have a blast. There was another area inside with live music, multiple areas you could purchase drinks (though you couldn’t bring into exhibits so that kinda sucked) and overall a really rad date night out. We concluded with hangs at The Lawrence and deviled eggs. A Friday well spent in the A-T-L for sure!

And lastly, I’ll leave you with a gif of Dustin having fun spinning with his cocktail by the talented Sarah “Slaw” Lawrence!

Cirque du Soleil AMALUNA + a GIVEAWAY (closed)

DATE NIGHT
Sunday evening we were invited to check out the new Cirque du Soleil act in town called Amaluna as media.  I had been to the Totem performance back in December of 2012 and was excited to check out a new act!  I was excited to learn that it was Cirque’s 30th anniversary because I knew they’d probably go all out with this act-and that they DID! 15348969338_9043cb39a4_k
What I wore: TOMS shades, H&M jacket, Rag-O-Rama dress (sorry can’t remember the brand!) Ali Sage necklace and Nine West booties. When I asked Dustin to jump in front of the camera he was such a good sport. Adore him! What Dustin wore: a shirt from TJ Maxx I saw and loved and surprised him with, we both like the arrow details in the pattern. Gap jeans, Clarks oxfords.

Without giving too much away…the story line of the show goes something like this:  a young woman living on a mysterious island that is governed by goddesses is being given a coming-of-age celebration by her mother.  A storm lands a group of men on the shore leading to the main character, Miranda, meeting one of the men and falling in love. They face many trials and obstacles before they can trust one another and properly be blessed by the community.

Here are some stills to give you an idea of what to expect, though it’s so much more magical in real life!

The actors show just how much the human body can really do!  With a cast of 70% women this particular performance is unlike any others in years past.  Even the band is made up of all women, pretty cool!  I especially enjoyed the quirkiness of the “ring leaders” who kept the crowd distracted and involved in between acts.  At one point during the performances I thought to myself, “this is like being at a REALLY eclectic gymnastics meet” and when I told Dustin this thought, he agreed.  At the Q&A we learned they actually cast gymnasts and brought in some aspects that had never been done, like the uneven bars, so I was pretty spot on!  That “pool” you see above was another never-been-done-before part of the show. Well, it had never been done for a traveling show.  It’s filled with water and is actually being filtered and heated to 98 degrees.  It took four hours to fill and so they don’t drain it until they hit the road to the next city-that’s why it has a filtration system. Also, it’s SO HEAVY they can’t remove it from the stage-so it’s integrated into the set for each performance.  The Q&A at the end was so interesting, I could go on and on about all the stuff we learned but I want to get to the exciting part of this post-

weekend wear 01

14058743414_abdcb73faf_bWeekend Recap:

Friday evening was date night for Dustin and I at a new spot in town called Sweet Auburn Barbecue in the Highlands.  We had heard it was a must visit from so many friends so we wanted to give it a go. I knew I’d like it right off the bat after walking in and spotting rustic decor and a vintage American flag. We each ordered a specialty cocktail and meat platter for dinner consisting of BBQ pulled pork and sides. I got the Sweet Water 420 baked beans and mac-n-cheese he got the grits and brussel sprouts. We were blown away! Seriously.  The baked beans were my favorite part, they had the perfect amount of added bacon.  We were so full after devouring we couldn’t fathom getting dessert, that was until we were literally convinced by a neighbor at our communal table to try the banana pudding-so we made room and were glad we did!  As any Southern dessert should, the yummy dessert was served in a cute little mason jar.

Then on Saturday I went out to Arabia Mountain with a local singer songwriter named Sydney Ward to shoot photos for a soon to launch website called “I Spy Atl.” Sydney and I both squealed many times with joy over how the photos looked in-camera, I’m super excited to share with launch. More details on ISPYATL coming soon! That night we went to Dustin’s cousin’s house in Cumming, GA where we hung and grilled out and played with their 6-month old twin boys. Needed a low key night after hiking and getting partially sun-burnt for sure!

Sunday we went to the Braves game with Dustin’s family and a friend. The game was slow but we enjoyed conversation, beers and brats. At the end of the game a crazy storm rolled through and even though we ran to the car, which was parked far away from the stadium, we got drenched. Dustin had my purse (which contained my camera) tucked under his arms trying to keep it dry while I was running and laugh-screaming. My camera was unharmed and we had many good laughs, love silly memories like these!!

If you experienced any of the scary weather or tornadoes last night I sincerely hope you and your loved ones are ok! My two biggest fears are sharks and tornadoes, so you can imagine how high-strung I was this morning at 6:00am when our power went out and wind was sucking my blinds up against the window. The weather seems to be better but watching the forecast like a hawk.

Have a pleasant rest of the week!

Before even trying on this jacket at H&M I knew it was going to be mine.  The contrasting sleeves and hip approach to a trench, it was a “DUH I’m SO buying this” moment!  It’s also much warmer than I thought and there’s still room in it for layering, best $50 I’ve spent this Fall/Winter!

Cirque DATE Soleil

last week’s date night at Cirque du Soleil was quite an adventure! ryan and i had to rush through dinner, but luckily the pop-up restaurant Hudson North made it possible to get in a quick bite, a few drinks, and a couple pics before showtime. the performance was nothing shy of mind blowing. Cirque du Soleil specializes in the unbelievable, so of course the acrobatic stunts from the synchronized routines on the high bar to the high flying trapeze acts were indescribably good. get this, each act has its own live music that the performance hinges on being flawless, for the sake of the performers, and they did not disappoint. the story line was really enjoyable plus, the added humor and skits had us in stitches and they didn’t even speak! Cirque du Soleil is a good time, a solid date night, and there’s not a bad seat in the….TENT!

now playing til December 31st

Hudson North: there’s only 21 days left for this lil pop-up so visit quick! 19th Street W District Ave, near the movie theater in Atlantic Station-just a heads up: food is slightly spicier than listed, but the mason jar desserts are DELIGHTFUL!

post-show we were given a backstage glimpse into what goes into the Cirque du Soleil costumes, stage setup, the performers’ exercise schedule, life on the road, and so much more I didn’t capture!
