DECOR: MIRRORS

[Please welcome my first contributor, Ciara Sames, to LF!]

Hi Lady Flashback friends! I’m so excited to be sharing interior spaces and inspiration here on Jess’s blog. I’m a graphic designer during the day, but I’ve been interested in decorating ever since I was a kid. I plan on sharing some decorating tips, home trends, and just general home eye candy. Today I’m going to be sharing a little insight on decorating with mirrors.

It’s easy to overlook mirrors as a decorating element for anything other than your bathroom or your bedroom, but the truth is, mirrors can work in any room. They help open the space up and reflect more light into a sometimes dark room.

When looking for a mirror for your room, think about the statement you want to make with it. Do you want to add it to a collection of framed art, or do you want to make an impact with a grand mirror? Think about whether you’re for something new and modern or vintage. Adding a vintage mirror to your modern space can bring in a fresh, eclectic feel.

[Have a good weekend Flashy Friends!]

Snowpocalypse 2014

On Tuesday Atlanta and surrounding areas as well as Alabama was surprisingly dumped on with around 2 inches of snow and ice and caused total madness.  I was one of the lucky ones who was sent home from work around 1pm and so it only took me 30 minutes longer than normal to make it to the house whereas most of my friends weren’t so fortunate.  A coworker who left at the same time spent 9+ hours in the car to go the same distance but her route included the mess of an interstate. My poor boyfriend spent 4 hours in the car to get from campus to my loft which was a measly 3 miles-totally nuts! After I made it home I immediately hit up Kroger for supplies, ie. beer, and stayed indoors until Dustin arrived and suggested we go check out the Beltline, here’s our mini-adventure-

We didn’t go too far from the house since it was legit FREEZING and no amount of layers was keeping this cold natured lady warm.  We did go to the North Ave. overpass and watch cars, even trucks, attempt to make it up the icy hill until a cop on an intercom told them to “do not proceed, safely do a u-turn and head back.”  We were amazed at all the stories that flooded our FB newsfeed of people spending hours and hours in the car, folks trapped at work or spending the night on the highway, kids stuck on school buses and even a woman who delivered a baby on the interstate!

Bet you are wondering how in the *bleep* 2-ish inches of snow shut down a city, well here are two articles I found interesting and accurate, 1 & 2.  Today Atl is up and running and I’m back at work downtown at the Mart. Hope everyone in GA and Bamaland is also back to normal!

CRITICAL ASSS

Hope everyone survived their Monday! Over at my offices we are gearing up for the Apparel Show so it’s the usual pre-show crazy but it feels good to keep this month fast-paced since January seems to drag on and on.  This weekend Dustin and I saw the new movie, Wolf on Wall Street and had many’a good laughs! That film was wild, long and hilarious-definitely recommend if the F-word and nudity doesn’t offend you because Leo’s roll is phenomenal! We also attended the Winter Beer Fest at the Masquerade Music Park, of course we had lots of fun as we both love beer and live music.  In between these activities I snapped photos for Jezebel street style and visited Molly Rose Freeman‘s art studio at the Goat Farm. I’ll be working on those photos this week and will post a little interview with her soon. Today I’d like to share my photos from the lady bike ride, Critical Asss-

Ride started at Estoria in Cabbagetown and went through O4W to Little Five Points back around to the bar. It was a brisk sunny day that was filled with catching up with old friends and making a few new gal pals.

I gave our bike gang the name “Ally Cats” cause clearly are rebels that wreak havoc on the Beltline :P

To stay warm I wore an H&M hat, Gap sweatshirt, Gap denim shirt, 7 For All Mankind jeans (yes my ankles were cold!), new Asics from Free People.com and a Tulle Jacket I got via winning an Instagram contest via Need Supply

I don’t always bike in the cold, but when I do it’s with a bunch of kick asss ladies around the streets of ATL!

DECOR: PLANTS

Recently had my third roommate switch-a-roo and thus gone through yet another phase of home decor in the loft which to me is both fun and refreshing.  Each time I’ve deep cleaned and moved furniture since the roommate moving out has taken chucks of the living room with them, though most of the overall housewares are mine.  One thing I love about my place is the amount of plants.  A neighbor that was leaving gifted me tons of tropical plants and I’ve collected a bunch myself so my home feels as if it’s an indoor garden!  This is not always the case as plants come and go, I sorta got my dad’s green thumb but sometimes plants just die for no good reason. Two of my plants were grown from clippings of a 24 year old plant my parents have had since my youngest brother was born!  I enjoy getting inspired from Pinterest and not just fashion-wise but also for the home and thought I’d share some of my favorite rooms with plants:

Plants are great for many reasons not only do they add life to your home but they add color and most importantly they also improve the air you breath!  A while ago I did a DIY post for Common Creativ with plants, see post here.  Expect to see more posts like this coming soon from a new contributor, Ciara of Glass and Stable! -HAPPY FRIDAY-

shawlsmith london

It isn’t hard for photos to get lost in my Iphoto library. Currently tasked with moving 2013’s photos to an external hard drive to be exact that’s 14,805 photos just from last year! While that is a lot, you have to remember I do event photography and also snap way more photos than I ever need at shoots because it’s always better to have more than wishing for additions after the fact.  So recently when I was going through said humongous photo library I stumbled upon photos that Dustin took when the tree still had leaves and we were able to wear a lot less layers.

Shawlsmith London sent me a few of their scarves to test drive.  I selected this pretty light blue, an electric blue and a grey/white mix.  What I like most about their shawls is the length.  You can really play with the way you wear them, such as looped around your neck or just hanging on either side.

This afternoon was so pretty! Missing warm weather like crazy but at least ATL isn’t covered in snow like other cities at the moment.

This past weekend I went on another bike ride but this time it was girls only! I’ll be working on those photos and posting them soon, check back for the “Critical Asss” ride beginning of next week but to hold you over I’ll be posting some sort of inspiration post on Friday.
